Identify examples of how the statistical methods have been used in research studies.

Qualitative Data Analysis

As a nurse engaged in evidence-based practice, it is important to recognize how statistics and other data analysis tools are used to generate and assess evidence. Most nurses need only a foundational understanding of statistical tools and terminology to understand the majority of research studies. As a nurse, you should be able to recognize the most commonly used statistical tests, how and when they are used, and how significance is determined.

In this Discussion, you examine different types of statistics and statistical tests, when and why these particular tests would be selected for use, and, most importantly, what the results indicate.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in your assigned chapter (Chapter 23, “Qualitative Data Analysis”)

Chapter 23, “Qualitative Data Analysis”

The focus of this chapter is qualitative data analysis, which is more difficult in some ways than quantitative analysis, because there are not specific tests that can be used. Instead, much of the analysis is based on the researcher’s ability to identify patterns of behavior or similarities in events. Suggestions are provided for analysis of each of the major types of qualitative studies and how to document findings.

Polit, D. F., & Beck, C. T. (2012).  Nursing research: Generating and assessing evidence for nursing practice (Laureate Education, Inc., custom ed.). Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

  • Develop a 1-page study sheet that includes the following:

o    The key concepts of the chapter: Focus on the basic concepts that are important for nurses to understand as they review research studies. Discuss why it is important for nurses to understand the basics of these statistical methods.

o    A description of the statistical methods covered in the chapter, what they measure, and under what circumstances they are used. Identify examples of how the statistical methods have been used in research studies.

o    An explanation of the key statistical tests and how they measure significance (if applicable).

What do you consider are some of the problems that affect supply chain management success?

Supply Chain Management as a Value Driver

A successful supply chain strategy includes good design and implementation. However, supply chain strategy is not considered truly successful until there is a measurable contribution to the bottom line. To be successful, managers must plan, forecast, and execute the operational plan as well as face and overcome the organizational, partner-based, and personnel-based factors that can diminish value. Effective supply chain management continues to grow in importance as a competitive differentiator for most companies. However, most companies fail to realize a competitive advantage or value for the customer.

Using the module readings, ABC University online library resources, and the Internet, research supply chain management. As you examine the readings in this module, consider how change affects all stakeholders in the supply chain and apply those reflections to the following questions:

  • What do you consider are some of the problems that affect supply chain management success?
  • Using at least two current examples, discuss effective supply chain strategies that were used by a company to positively impact organizational effectiveness and yield desirable results.

Assignment 1: The Primary Care Clinic

Due Week 4 and worth 160 points

You are the manager of a new primary care clinic located about twenty five (25) miles outside of a small city (population of 50,000). With five (5) family physicians, two (2) nurse practitioners, two (2) physicians’ assistants (PAs), and twenty (20) clinical support staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and CMAs, the clinic provides primary care services to a diverse community of people living and working outside the city limits. Originally a rural area, the community has been growing and now includes promising opportunities in employment, education, and comfortable living spaces for young families. However, there are still many residents who struggle to make ends meet with older farms that have belonged to families for generations.

The central city includes two (2) large acute care facilities, and one (1) tertiary care facility that is known for its excellent pulmonary care. Both acute care hospitals provide the usual services such as labor and delivery, outpatient surgery, chronic diseases care, etc. and have fully equipped ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology. Up until this point, the residents have used the facilities’ emergency departments for routine illnesses and conditions when their private physicians were not readily available.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

  1. Analyze some of the key social, political, and economic factors that have led to the proliferation of urgent care facilities and primary care practices over the last 20-30 years.
  2. Create a comprehensive mission statement for the clinic, and discuss how it will facilitate the provision of quality services.
  3. Analyze and discuss one (1) or more directions the clinic might take to grow its business. Determine what factors you would consider when deciding what services to provide in-house and which ones to affiliate with other institutions.
  4. Decide how you will determine if the clinic is meeting its goals. Identify three (3) performance measurements you could use to evaluate the success of the clinic’s services. Begin by naming a goal, and then identify a quantifiable measurement you could use for each to determine if you are coming close or falling short of the goal.
  5. Determine how you would then address whatever opportunities for improvement seem to exist and what processes you would put in place.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
  7. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
    1. Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
    2. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
    3. Include a reference page. Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze the critical management issues, purpose, functions, and performance measures of different departments within healthcare organizations.
  • Examine the political, economic, and social forces that have influenced the organizational foundations of the United States healthcare system.
  • Explain how public policy has shaped the development of the U.S. healthcare system.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in health services organization management.
  • Write clearly and concisely about health services organization management using proper writing mechanics

Do you think GDP is the best measure of living standard?

Macroeconomics

Finding ways to improve humanity’s living standards is the point of economics. Having a good measure of living standards, you may think, is therefore pretty fundamental to the discipline. For decades economists have turned to gross domestic product (GDP) when they want an estimate of how well off people are. By how much are Americans better off than Indians, or than their parents’ generation? Chances are the answer will start with GDP.

GDP is really a measure of an economy’s output, valued at market prices (to the extent that you have them). As societies produce more, and therefore earn more, their material well-being rises. So it is no surprise that so many economists and official statisticians broadly accept GDP as a measure of living standards.

Do you think GDP is the best measure of living standard? Why? Why not?

The acid test & flattening cash flow over the fiscal year

Although an owner of a business with an acid test ratio <1 should be concerned with cash flow, perhaps there is a lot more to the story than just that result.

For instance, in a business that is cyclical in nature, for instance, at a “down” time of the year, a financial analyst might see that the acid test ratio is <1.  Should this be a time to panic?  No, of course not.  This particular scenario would be a time to understand more about the business.  This would be a time to plan for the future.  If you can see seasonality (up times and down times) in your business or with your products, you can prepare for such times.

So, class…these ratios were created to help educate you about your business.  Sometimes they might look scary, and although they might indeed be indicative of a global problem with the business, it is good to step back and see the whole picture of the business.

Class, what are some seasonal businesses that come to mind?  What have these businesses done to flatten out their cash flow over the fiscal year?
