• Read the following case study:
  • Joseph is a 59-year-old construction worker who recently suffered a stroke. A small blood clot became lodged in one of the vessels serving the right side of his brain and restricted blood flow to a portion of his right precentral gyrus. Many neurons in that area were damaged or destroyed and, as a result, Joseph is partially paralyzed on the left side of his body. He is able to move his left leg and walk, and can also move his left arm, but his left hand and the left side of his face are paralyzed.
• Answer the following questions about the case study:
  • Why were Joseph’s left face and hand paralyzed, but not the rest of his arm or his leg?
  • What is preventing Joseph from moving his left hand? In your answer, include the following:
    • First, describe normal function of a motor neuron that forms a synapse with a muscle cell. How is the signal that initiates movement transmitted from the neuron to the muscle? Describe this process in detail.
    • Next, keeping in mind that the motor neuron itself is not damaged, explain how damage or destruction of a neuron that communicates with the motor neuron prevents Joseph from moving his hand.
  • With time, and perhaps some physical therapy, Joseph may recover some of the movement in his left hand and face. What factors might contribute to this recovery? In your answer, include the following:
    • Why can’t Joseph’s brain simply replace those neurons that were damaged and destroyed by the stroke?
    • How might compensation allow Joseph to regain some of his lost movement?
    • Describe at least one experimental treatment that might improve movement in Joseph’s case, and explain how this treatment would impact Joseph’s nervous system.

eview the article, “Management Without Consequences: 24% of Companies Pay Bonuses to Failing Performers.” Compensation and benefits is a very important part of the strategic plan of an organization.  Compensation and benefits are designed to attract, motivate, and retain employees and to achieve an advantage over competitors.  Financial forms of compensation include direct pay (including base salary) and variable pay (also known as incentives or pay-for-performance). Indirect pay is more frequently known as benefits, such as paid and unpaid time off, insurance protection, and retirement programs. Lifestyle benefits or quality of work-life (QWL) issues are very important for achieving a competitive edge in efforts to attract and retain top talent.

• Describe the relationship between an organization’s business strategy and its pay systems. Demonstrate an understanding of a pay model.
• Discuss a goal or objective of your current organization. What aspect of the company’s compensation system aligns with this goal/objective?
• Discuss specific outcomes in the pay model an organization could impact through the use of quality of work-life (QWL) programs.  What do you think is the most important outcome resulting from these programs?  How can an organization formally evaluate whether a QWL program has been effective?

Discussion 2

Wage rates in the United States are higher than similarly skilled workers in other countries such as China, Mexico and India. Consequently, many U.S. businesses have outsourced their manufacturing and production needs to take advantage of these lower wage rates. Discuss how, working collaboratively, the federal government and U.S. businesses can modify employee compensation packages to become more globally competitive. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Assignment 2: Defining Criminal Justice

Justin just graduated from the police academy and the Centervale Police Department (CPD) assigned him to a mentor to put his learning into practice.

Justin’s assigned mentor is Anne Doil, a veteran CPD police officer with nine years of service. She is known for being an extremely meticulous officer and has served in several capacities with the CPD. Every year, she teaches a course on criminal justice administration. The course encompasses topics related to reporting, recording facts and evidences, and investigation of crimes. The course also includes topics on forensics, interviewing and interrogation techniques, security, victimology, testimony of witnesses, constitutional law, and corrections.

The department selected Anne to train Justin because she understands the criminal court system and the importance of building a strong foundation before going into the field as a patrol officer.
