Overview

The following short essay assignment is designed to help prepare you for an important part of the Final Paper. In this essay, you will do the following:

• Choose either the same ethical question you formulated and introduced in the Week One Assignment, or a different one based off the list of acceptable topics.
• Choose either utilitarian or deontological ethical theory to apply to the ethical question.
• Explain the core principles of that theory.
• Demonstrate how the principles of the theory support a certain position on that question.
• Articulate a relevant objection to that position.

Instructions

Write a five-paragraph essay that conforms to the requirements below. The paper must be at least 1,000 words in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. The paragraphs of your essay should conform to the following guidelines:

• • Introduction

    The introduction should clearly state the ethical question under consideration, and define the essential issues. You may build upon the question and introduction you provided in the Week One Assignment; or you may choose a different question, but it must be based off the list of acceptable topics. Your introduction should include a brief remark about the kind of theory you will be using to approach this question. The last sentence of the introduction should briefly summarize the or position on the issue you think is best supported by this theory and succinctly state what the objection will be. Bear in mind that your essay will not be concerned with your own position on this issue, but what someone reasoning along the lines of the chosen theory would conclude; this may or may not be the position you took in the Week One Assignment.

 

• • Body Paragraphs

    Each paragraph in the body should start with a topic sentence that clearly identifies the main idea of the paragraph.

    • • Theory explanation

        Explain the core principles or features of the deontological or utilitarian theory and the general account of moral reasoning it provides.

        You must quote from at least one required resource other than your textbook that defends or represents that theory. Refer to the list of acceptable resources.

    • • Application

        Demonstrate how the principles or features of the deontological or utilitarian theory apply to the question under consideration and identify the specific conclusion that results from applying the reasoning characteristic of that kind of approach.

        Your application should clearly show how the conclusion follows from the main principles and features of the theory as addressed in the previous paragraph. Please see the associated guidance for help in fulfilling this requirement.

    • Objection

      Raise a relevant objection to the argument expressed in your application. An objection articulates a plausible reason why someone might find the argument problematic. This can be a false or unsupported claim or assumption, fallacious reasoning, a deep concern about what the conclusion involves, a demonstration of how the argument supports other conclusions that are unacceptable, etc. You should aim to explain this objection as objectively as possible, (i.e., in a way that would be acceptable to someone who disagrees with the argument from the previous paragraph).

      Note that this does not necessarily mean that the objection succeeds, or that the conclusion the theory supports is wrong. It may be an obstacle that any adequate defense of the conclusion would have to overcome, and it may be the case that the theory has the resources to overcome that obstacle. Your task here is simply to raise the objection or present the “obstacle.”

 

• Conclusion

  The conclusion should very briefly summarize the main points of your essay.

Resource Requirements

• You must use at least two resources to support your claims.
• At least one of the resources should be one of the Required or Recommended Resources that represent the theory you have chosen, and must be drawn from the list of acceptable resources available in your online classroom.
• The other source should pertain to the particular issue you are writing about and should be drawn from the required or recommended readings in the course, or be a scholarly source found in the Ashford Unversity Library.
• You are encouraged to use additional resources, so long as at least two conform to the requirements above.
• The textbook does not count toward satisfying the resources requirement.
• To count toward satisfying the requirement, resources must be cited within the body of your paper and on the reference page and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

1.      Compare and contrast the differences between mass, differentiated, niche, and one-to-one marketing. Include the following in your response:

Describe the products and services that may best benefit from the use of each of these.

Describe the product or service that your current or past organization produces or sells, and which strategy your firm uses to market its goods or services. 2.     Utilizing the “Conceptual Model for a Sales Force Organization Audit” found in Chapter 13 of your textbook, assume the role of an auditor to evaluate each of the elements discussed (sales management functions, sales force organization planning system, sales manager evaluation, environment of the sales force organization) on ONE of the following companies: Coca Cola, PepsiCo, PPG, Sysco Systems, or Johnson and Johnson.

 

3. Discuss the sales management planning process steps. Use the products or services of a company for which you have worked or one you know well as your example. Include the results that should be achieved by accomplishing each step.

 

4. You are the sales manager for a new upscale line of skin care products based in Hollywood, CA. You are tasked with hiring a nationwide sales team consisting of five territories: northeast, southeast, midwest, northwest, and southwest. Using the information provided in Chapter 8 of our textbook, discuss how you will find and recruit your sales team and know that they are a fit for the role.

 

5. Using the Internet as your resource for information, provide examples of people who demonstrate the leadership styles based on Theory H (explained in Chapter 10 of our textbook). Briefly explain why each person fits his/her designated leadership style.

 

 

6. You are the national sales manager for an industrial chemical company. Your industry is being inundated by new entrants in the market, and your company has lost market share for the past five quarters. Adopt one of the contemporary approaches to leadership found in Chapter 10 of our textbook—transformational leadership, Pygmalion leadership, or empowerment. Use the foundation of your selected approach to explain what you could do to turn around your sales results. Please include your rationale for selecting the approach that you did.

For Part B, your essay should be addressing the questions/points below:

• Do we see an overall warming of the environment?
• Some theorists envisioned that we would see a more pronounced warming of minimum temperatures than maximum temperatures.  This might result in a reduced range of temperatures.  What trends does the data show?
• Many theories that look at global warming envisage more drought and less surplus water conditions for inland or continental locations.  Therefore, we might see some trends in precipitation amounts and the frequency of certain amounts of precipitation.  What do the trends show?
• In reference to actual evapotranspiration, surplus/deficit conditions and runoff/streamflow, what might we expect with a warming climate?
• Are there clear-cut answers in the trends that we see?
• What does that tell us about researching environmental issues like global warming?
• Are there other types of data or information that we need to look at to make a worthwhile analysis?  If so, what would they be?
• What are the implications of the results of this study?
• Can you link any of the climate trends to human agency?
• If the trends continue in their current direction, what are the potential implications for people living in the Wabash Watershed?

In short, we are looking at a specific geographic area, the Wabash Watershed.  We are looking at a specific time period, 1961-1990, utilizing raw, 5-year average, and 10-year average data, with respect to temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, moisture surplus, moisture deficit, and surface runoff.  What does this data tell about this region over this time period, and what does it indicate about the future?  Does this tell us anything, positively or negatively about global warming theory?

Lifespan Development Topic One

Below is a list of options from which you are to select a topic for the Week Two assignment. These same topics will be featured in subsequent weeks. Make sure that the topic you select for this week is different from the topic you intend to select for the Week Three assignment and the topic you intend to utilize for the Outline of the Final Paper and the Final Paper (Weeks Four and Five, respectively). Examine one of the following topics on lifespan development connecting research and life.

• What do twin and adoption studies tell us about the effects of nature (i.e., genetic influences) and nurture (i.e., environmental influences) on human development? Select at least one of the main domains of human development (i.e., physical, cognitive, or social-emotional).
• How much credit or blame do parents deserve for the way we are? Select at least one of the main domains of human development (physical, cognitive, or social-emotional) for your answer.

• Why do we have a need to belong (to affiliate with others)?
• How do our bodies and minds change from early to late adulthood?

Once you have chosen your topic, examine the various theories of human development learned in the course and choose one or two that best assist you to understand the issues involved in your topic.

For this assignment address the following:

• Examine various theories of human development, describing relevant terminology, and addressing how the theory assists in the understanding of issues involved in the selected topic.
• Identify and describe at least two domains of human development (physical, biological, emotional, cognitive, and/or social) and how they are impacted by the chosen topic.
• Identify and describe the stages of development that are affected by the chosen topic.
• Describe the cultural and historical perspectives of the chosen topic, demonstrating an understanding of how the topic has been perceived over time and by other cultures. Provide relevant examples.

   1. Conclude with an answer to the selected question. Did the evidence you surveyed answer the question satisfactorily? Including your analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the available evidence.
   2. If possible, suggest the course that future research should take if answers to the selected question are less than conclusive.
6. Must use at least two scholarly sources, all of which must come from the Ashford University Library or Google Scholar.
   1. It is important that you ask yourself if the articles specifically address the selected topic. It is not always easy to find the right articles. Thus, give yourself some time to search before you finalize your selection.
   2. You may reference your textbook and other required materials from the course; however, these will not fulfill the resource requirements.
7. Must include an annotated bibliography which briefly summarizes each article including the purpose of the investigation, its methodology, and results.
   1. If possible, select peer-reviewed articles that summarize the evidence available in a given field of study (e.g., meta-analysis combines the findings of different studies to uncover trends, commonalities and differences).
   2. Order the articles in the way you think you will discuss them in your paper. Then develop a summary of the scientific evidence that answers the question you selected.

The Final Project for this class is a Formal Report. It is due on Wednesday of Week Four by 11:59 PM Eastern time. You will follow the format found on pages 417-430 of your textbook. Please review the sections that should be included as indicated below.

 

Your paper will need to identify a problem and three potential solutions. The topic should be appropriately related to your area of study or a professional matter. The topic should be specific and career based. Consider issues such as occupational safety, cultural diversity, violence or bullying, staffing or personnel, technology, communication, policy or compliance. Frederic Bourdin is the imposter in the film (as you know), and he did some pretty horrendous things to innocent people.  He’s a divisive figure for sure, and the reason I’m asking you to defend him is only because the family accepted him as one of their own, even while knowing (they had to know) that he was an imposter.  They must have had their reasons (or did they, I’m still confused by their motivations).  So that’s it, two separate papers.  You can argue for them any way you want, but PLEASE be specific, and include moments from the film, your opinions on the matter, and textual information (from the textbook) to make your case.

Application: Patient Safety Risks

As noted in the Institute of Medicine report, To Err is Human, “It may be part of human nature to err, but it is also part of human nature to create solutions, find better alternatives, and meet the challenges ahead” (Institute of Medicine, 1999, p. 15).

What are the most common—or most significant—risks to patient safety? How do these risks vary in different health care settings or with disparate groups of patients? What can be done to address these risks? You will explore these questions and more in this Application Assignment.

To prepare for this Application:

• Begin by brainstorming types of health care organizations and groups of patients (e.g., geriatric patients requiring chronic care, pediatric patients admitted for acute care). Identify a particular type of setting and/or patient population to help you pinpoint your focus for the following step.
• Review the National Patient Safety Goals, the CDC’s NHSN Web site, and the information on patient safety concerns presented in the other Learning Resources. Select a specific patient safety risk (e.g., patient falls, medication reconciliation) to focus on for this assignment.
• Analyze the systems errors and/or human factors errors that should be considered with regard to this safety risk.
• Reflect on related insights that could be gained from high-reliability organizations. What approaches do these organizations use that might be applicable within a health care organization?
• Consider the strategies and tools (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean) that could be used to assess and reduce this particular risk.
• Evaluate the potential benefits of patient and family involvement and steps that could be taken to ensure that they are included in this endeavor.
