A psychology professional must be knowledgeable of the rules and regulations that govern the profession in his or her state of residence. Once on the website, look for the state’s rules and regulations governing professional psychology. Then, conduct an Internet search for information on consent and confidentiality for mental health treatment for minors in your state of residence. In the discussion, you will address the following case study:

You are a counselor. Twelve-year-old Billy is using drugs without his parents’ knowledge and has come to see you for help. Billy wants outpatient treatment for his substance abuse and informs you that his parents do not know about his drug use. He refuses to permit you to share information with his parents. While a person under the age of 18 is often considered a minor and generally most states would require them to obtain consent from a parent or guardian prior to receiving mental health treatment, there are several exceptions to this general rule.

In your initial post, analyze your state’s rules and regulations governing psychology as a profession as well as your state information on consent and confidentiality with regard to minors. Apply these regulations to Billy’s case. Elaborate on how you would approach the case by providing information on your state’s consent and confidentiality laws and assessing any impact these may have on your options for Billy’s treatment. Apply any relevant ethical principles and professional standards of psychology as they relate to this complex situation. Evaluate any personal beliefs that may conflict with legal requirements you have as a counselor within your state. PART II Exploring the Influence of the APA Within the Psychology Profession

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the Schantz (2014) “A Young Scholar’s Guide to Building a Professional Network” article, review the Divisions listed on the APA website paying special attention to the divisions that may interest you, and review the O*Net Online website .
In your initial post, identify one division related to your career interest that you would consider joining and one specific job related to that division. Conduct a search on your chosen job using O*Net Online . Briefly elaborate on the information provided on the job you searched, and be sure to include educational requirements, duties, future outlook, and salaries related to the position. Use the Internet to search for and compile information about the leading employer prospects for this position in your geographical area. Compare and contrast the compiled information with that from O* Net. Include expected duties, number of job offerings found, educational requirements, job experience, and salary levels where applicable. Analyze psychology as a profession and assess the role the APA could play in aiding you in the development of a professional network. This week, you will research and create an annotated bibliography of five peer-reviewed articles that were published within the last 10 years and relate to the article you selected in Week Two for your Article Review. The peer-reviewed articles you select should be researched in the Ashford University Library and represent a variety of viewpoints on the subject matter. They may support or refute the information presented in your chosen article for review. The Argumentative Research Essay

Purpose: To persuade
Audience: Diverse / Educated adults.
Length: 4-5 pages (1200 – 1500 words)

Your final essay will be an argumentative research essay. Once again I expect you to “join a conversation,” quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing from outside sources, while at the same time making your own individual contribution to the topic. You will choose your topic from the New York Times “Room for Debate.” Go to: http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate and view the many topics available.

For each topic there are multiple viewpoints. These will be a central part of the “conversation” to which you respond. Most topics have between five and eight separate viewpoints. Read all of them. Then begin formulating your own argument in response. While I don’t expect you to quote or summarize from each individual viewpoint for your topic, you should quote, paraphrase, summarize from some of them.

In addition to the articles on the Room for Debate pages, you will probably need to conduct additional research to support your own viewpoint. This research can come from any reputable source. See “Evaluating Sources” for tips on selecting reputable, scholarly sources.

Whichever topic you choose, you will eventually need to develop an argumentative thesis statement that clearly identifies your position on the topic. Remember that a thesis for an argumentative essay should be debatable and should clearly take a stand. Refer to the readings in this section to help you create a debatable thesis statement.

To supplement your argument, you must also include at least one visual element in your essay. The visual element can be a chart, graph, photograph or illustration. The visual should be used in such a way as to support the ideas and arguments in your essay and it should be embedded within the body of your essay (not added as an attachment or link). You should document the image in much the same way as you would document a quotation. To help you choose or create a visual element, refer to the reading in this unit on Visual Rhetoric.

Finally, now would be a good time to review the readings from part one of this course, particularly those on integrating quotations and citing sources. It is not enough to simply meet the research requirement by throwing in a quote here and there. I want to see that you can integrate the ideas of others neatly into your own argument.

Public policy is often used to positively regulate behaviors that are deemed detrimental to our health and, therefore, affect our development across the lifespan. However, it is sometimes debated that public policy intrudes on an aspect of our development known as autonomy as outlined in Erikson’s Developmental Stages.

In your initial post, evaluate the unique perspectives regarding autonomy (or personal responsibility) and public policy presented in the required resources. Compare the peer-reviewed findings to the popular article findings and address the main advantages and disadvantages of each perspective as presented. part II Changing the Course of Psychological Development

Prior to completing this discussion, read the required material from the Shaffer (2011) text as well as the Berzonsky (2004), Fiese (2013), and Burkitt (2010) articles.

Read the PSY605: Mila Singer Life Story document. Choose one aspect of Mila’s life to alter. This element can be an event, a personal characteristic, an environmental factor, or an aspect of the timeline. In your initial post, identify the original life story element you intend to change and explain how you intend to change it. Use Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development to explain Mila’s stage of development at the time this change takes place and address how the change affects Mila’s psychological development.

After identifying the initial change and describing it, create a list of three additional outcomes in Mila’s development across the lifespan that will likely be affected by this change. For each, identify the current outcome in Mila’s life story and propose a rationale for changing this outcome. Apply either Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory or Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory to Mila’s life to create a hypothesis as to how and why these outcomes would likely adjust due to the changes you have made.

Briefly summarize your personal reaction(s) to making the initial change and how it altered the subsequent outcomes. Explain how differences in life events create differences in human development.

Regardless of the track and issue chosen, a target population must be identified for the proposal.

Prior to completing this assignment, review the guidelines for the Program Proposal assignment in Week Six of this course and review the Program Proposal Track and Topics in Developmental Psychology document. You may also review the Federal Program Inventory for ideas.

For this assignment, you will identify and describe the foundational components for your proposal based on the information requested in the “Beginning the Program Proposal Process” section of the Program Proposal assignment.

Choose an area of interest. This area of interest will include a general track and define a specific issue within the track that is of interest to you and presents a contemporary problem to be solved. See the Program Proposal Tracks and Topics in Developmental Psychology document to view the tracks (Community, Clinical/Counseling, and Education) and suggested issues within each track for the proposal. Once the track and issue have been chosen, write a one-paragraph summary of the specific track and issue to be addressed in the proposal.

Identify the target population. Regardless of the track and issue chosen, a target population must be identified for the proposal. Identify the target population associated with the chosen issue. Within the target population, choose the developmental stage that will act as the focus (sample) for the proposal. Many programs may directly and/or indirectly influence people in different stages; however, it is important to select the stage that is most applicable to the specific program being proposed. For example, in a program for adults who are caring for their elderly parents, the focus is on the adults (likely in middle adulthood) so a middle adulthood focus would be most appropriate for that program. Provide a one-paragraph rationale for the target population identified.

Identify the geographic location where the program will be deployed. Programming will be directly influenced by the location in which it will take place. For example, a child safety program in a rural farming community will likely have different objectives and needs than a child safety program in a large metropolitan city. Once the geographic location has been chosen, provide a one-paragraph rationale for that location.

Create a brief annotated bibliography. Research a minimum of five peer-reviewed articles on the chosen issue in the Ashford University Library and include citations for all articles in APA format as outline in the Ashford Writing Center. All sources utilized must have been published within the last 10 years. Provide a brief annotation for each cited article to address the relevance of the articles to your topic and how they will be used the proposal. Flip through the channels on a television set or walk into any bookstore in the United States, and you are likely to encounter various self-help reality shows or books offering insights into how you can help yourself with mental health issues.

For this discussion, pick one self-help television show or book to evaluate (Dr. Phil, Hoarders, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Managing Your Moods, Learn How to Boost Your Self Esteem, etc.). Identify your selection and provide enough information on the topic of the show or book to create adequate context. Analyze the validity, reliability, benefits, and value of the popular resource based on your reading and study of the science of psychology across the course. Describe the presentation of the content within the book or television show in terms of the role of authority the author or host takes. (Is the presentation informational or authoritative?) Explain any theoretical foundations or shortcomings found in the material. Evaluate the ability of the book or show to apply the methods within the presented material to the target population. Part II

Psychology Versus Pop Psychology

There is often a wide discrepancy between content presented in the mainstream media and that which is presented in the scientific literature. In this discussion, you will choose one contemporary psychological issue that is prevalent today (depression, body image, bullying, media influences, self-esteem, etc.). Research your selected topic in a popular publication (Psychology Today, Newsweek, New York Times, etc.). Then, using the Ashford University Library, locate a peer-reviewed journal article on the same topic. In your initial post, briefly identify your topic and provide enough detail for an adequate understanding. Compare and contrast the information presented by detailing commonalities and differences that exist in the two sources. Assess the contributions of the peer-reviewed source to the topic and identify any missing element in the popular source. Evaluate how adequately the popular article addresses the major components of the selected contemporary topic in psychology for a general population.

Evaluate the theoretical perspective on which the study is based.

Article Review

The purpose of an article review is to provide the academic community with a description, summary, and evaluation of the completed work. For the article review, students will assume the role of an expert who is critically evaluating contemporary research in the field of psychology. Students will incorporate material from across the course, analyzing and applying theories and principles of psychology, into a cohesive and well-written article review. This learning activity will facilitate the development of research skills, critical thinking, and writing skills that are necessary to success in the field of psychology. The article for review was chosen in Week Two of the course and must be used in this review. Carefully read the selected article, and then write the Article Review.
Begin with a well-written introduction to the article that:
Analyzes the article and identifies the professional area of psychology it represents
Assesses the roles of psychology professionals within this area and describes whether or not the article clearly and correctly represents these roles.
Evaluate the theoretical perspective on which the study is based
Detail the hypotheses presented in the study or the relationship of interest
Describe the sample(s) presented in the study (how participants were obtained, selected, sample size, etc.)
Discuss where the study was conducted: university setting (lab), organization (field), etc.
Examine the ethical concerns in the study using the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct as a guide.
Summarize the results of the study. Be certain to specify the findings and whether or not the hypotheses were supported.
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the study (usually found in the discussion section of the article).
