Two observations & a question

Two things to keep in mind as you are going through these formulas and doing your calculations this week are:

1.  In this course, Present Value (PV) will always be less than Future Value (FV) because it is assumed that the money is earning interest.

2.  You may use the tables, but you are not required to use them to do these problems.  You may use the formula and calculated everything on your calculator if you are not comfortable looking up a number in the table.  Whichever technique you choose, you need to be comfortable with it because you will need to use it on the quiz and the final exam.

Now class, in looking at the Time Value Formulas, why is the top value in the table on the 1 row and 1% column $1.01 on the future value sheet and $1.00 on the future value of an annuity sheet?

For this assignment, you will summarize the NAACP press release (pages 189-190 in A&B). Then you will write a letter to the editor in response to the press release. It is not necessary to respond to every point in the entire press release—and probably not possible. You may respond to only one point if you wish.

NOTE: Since this is a personal response, you may use “I” in your writing.

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT ASK YOURSELF:

• Why does the press release use numbers in the way it does?
• Why does the press release use certain phrases and terms?

This assignment has two parts: a summary of the article and a strong response. To get full credit for this assignment, you must do three things:

Assignment 3: Business-Level and Corporate-Level Strategies 

Due Week 6 and worth 300 points

Can not be about Apple or Nike.

Choose an industry you have not yet written about in this course, and one publicly traded corporation within that industry. Research the company on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

1. Analyze the business-level strategies for the corporation you chose to determine the business-level strategy you think is most important to the long-term success of the firm and whether or not you judge this to be a good choice. Justify your opinion.
2. Analyze the corporate-level strategies for the corporation you chose to determine the corporate-level strategy you think is most important to the long-term success of the firm and whether or not you judge this to be a good choice. Justify your opinion.
3. Analyze the competitive environment to determine the corporation’s most significant competitor.  Compare their strategies at each level and evaluate which company you think is most likely to be successful in the long term. Justify your choice.
4. Determine whether your choice from Question 3 would differ in slow-cycle and fast-cycle markets.
5. Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

Research Review Proposal (5pts)

Due Friday, February 5^th at the beginning of class (email submissions will not be accepted). Proposals turned in after 2/5 at 2:30 pm may be accepted for 0 points (in other words, I will give you feedback, but you will forfeit 5 points). Please type up the following (you may enumerate your responses):

1. Briefly describe what your topic will be.
2. Discuss how you will approach it from a sociological perspective. In the past, students who have not done well on their research project have relied too heavily on a psychological or biological perspective, or have a topic that is way too broad.
3. You should explain what sources you will use (be sure the sources are available), and how you will narrow down your topic.
4. Explain how you will present your findings to the class for the visual project presentation. (For example, poster presentation, PowerPoint, video, etc.)

One method healthcare companies use to finance future growth is to invest their excess cash in short-term investments. The four most common short-term investments are treasury bills, CDs, commercial paper, and money markets.

1. In your own words, explain how each of the four investments work and their relative risk level.
2. If your company had $100,000 to invest for around 1-year, which one of the 4 types of short-term investment would you suggest using and why?
3. Look at CD rates over different time periods. What are the current CD rates for 1-year? 5-years? 10-years? (You can find CD rates on many bank’s websites.) Why do you think the rates are different?

Synthesize the topics of leadership and teams by crafting an essay in which, using supporting materials, you assess the theory and practice of leadership as it relates to teams.

In your critical essay, address both of the following items:

1. Describe and explain how one leadership model (a model deemed valid by today’s research standards, as discussed in the module material) interacts with the most important performance outcomes with regard to teams.
2. Choose one or two contemporary leadership theories and describe how a leader who was following the tenets of the theory or theories would interact with the members of his or her team in order to maximize the strengths of work teams in general while mitigating the pitfalls of such teams. Support your thinking by describing and applying at least one example, which can be based on an actual case or a hypothetical one.
