Required Resources

Readings

  • Jones, G. R., & George, J. M. (2014). Essentials of contemporary management (6th ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill.
    • Chapter 7, “Designing Organizational Structure” (pp. 222–257)

This chapter addresses the different ways of structuring an organization. The authors emphasize the ways in which environmental, technology, and human factors can and should influence the choice of organizational structure. This discussion flows into an explanation of designing jobs, grouping jobs, and then forming divisions within an organization that may be based on functional, geographic, product, or market areas. The criteria and variations in global structures are also discussed. Finally the authors explain the establishment of lines of authority, communication, and collaboration.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Think about an organization that you have been a part of or are familiar with. Did that organization appear to have been rationally organized to achieve specific criteria? Were responsibilities clearly delineated? Were there unnecessary obstacles to communication or collaboration? Was technology adapted to the organization’s design, or was the organization’s structure adapted to take advantage of new technology? Was the structure of the organization truly efficient and effective? Did the organization’s structure influence the productivity and morale of employees? How might you go about changing the structure of that organization?

    • Chapter 8, “Control, Change, and Entrepreneurship” (pp. 258–295)

This chapter addresses the importance of organizational control and of designing a control process, as well as how technology and the establishment of control systems can facilitate organizational control. Two categories of control processes are examined. (1) “Output control” focuses on quantitative indicators of output, production, quality, satisfaction, and the achievement of goals, objectives, and targets. (2) “Behavior control” focuses on directing and influencing the behavior of employees and groups of employees through the use of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, boundaries, and direct supervision. Lastly, control is discussed as an important element of change management and of entrepreneurship.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Think about an organization that you have been a part of or are familiar with. Did the managers and supervisors have effective control over their areas of responsibilities? When the managers and supervisors wanted something changed or done, did this get changed or done in an efficient manner? Did the managers and supervisors really know what was occurring within their areas of responsibilities? Were there clear standards of performance and personal conduct, and how were these standards monitored and enforced? Were there goals, objectives, or targets for all functional areas? Was progress toward those goals, objectives, or targets continually monitored?

    • Chapter 9, “Motivation” (pp. 296–325)

This chapter addresses the nature of human motivation and introduces you to various theories that explain various aspects of motivation. Those theories include the family of “needs” theories, as well as expectancy theory, equity theory, goal-setting theory, and two learning theories. The chapter ends with a discussion of various ways in which money, in the form of compensation, has been used to influence employees’ behavior and performance.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Try to see how each of the theories complements the other theories. Ask yourself, what does each motivational theory contribute to your understanding of human motivation? What are the differences and the relati

Distinguish how your plan will motivate employees to best align themselves to MPBS’s goals.

ssignment 1: The MPBS Compensation Plan LASA (CO 1, 2, 3, 4)

NOTE:  As you prepare for this assignment, you should research typical United States, Japanese, and German approaches to compensation using your textbook, the Argosy University online library, and the Internet. Consider arguments for and against each of the three countries’ approaches to compensation.  Research the trends and issues affecting the global workforce. As you conduct your research, make note of the recent trends affecting the three approaches and the factors which might be causing each country’s approach to change.

The assignment:

MPBS has requested your assistance in developing a new and comprehensive compensation plan that will meet the company’s needs in both their domestic operations and their international operations.  MPBS management has asked you to review their current plan and prepare a report describing the new plan.

You have asked MPBS to describe the most important criteria they would like to see in the new plan and they have indicated they would like to have a compensation program that will:

  • Help align organizational efforts to the company’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Recognize, reward and stimulate good and excellent performance.
  • Be considered fair and equitable by as many company personnel as it is realistic to expect.
  • Withstand legal challenges.
  • Be cost effective.
  • Address the diverse needs of the scientific, administrative, sales, management, and technical staff.

MPBS recognizes that they have taken a very haphazard approach to employee benefits and have asked you to ignore the benefits they now provide as you develop a new employee benefits package for the company.  Your consulting team has met and worked up the framework of the report that should be submitted.  In addition to employee benefits, it must provide for annual adjustments to base pay, whether salary or hourly wage, and a pay for performance plan.   MPBS management has asked you to design the total compensation plan that will cover all employees located within the United States in detail first, then follow that detailed plan with recommendations on how it should differ for employees living and working in Germany and in Japan.

Your report should include the following:

  1. The core of the benefits package [e.g., insurance, paid time off (PTO), and retirement programs].
  2. Lifestyle benefits with appropriate summary details on each of these benefits.
  3. Classification of the percentage of the total compensation budget that should be allocated for the benefits plan.
  4. Annual adjustments to individual base pay.  Be specific.  Determine the extent (if any) to which adjustments to base pay should be tied to seniority, cost-of-living, or performance, or a specified combination of these.  Indicate any difference in guidelines for adjustments that should differ for specific occupational groups and/or geographical locations.
  5. Short-term and long-term incentive, or pay-for-performance plans, including whether the incentives should be based on individual, team/group, or organization-wide performance.
  6. Compare any differences that should be made for employees living and working in Germany and in Japan.
  7. Provide rationale for how well your plan meets the most important criteria MPBS provided you in the beginning of the assignment.
  8. Distinguish how your plan will motivate employees to best align themselves to MPBS’s goals.  Briefly describe the motivational theories that support your reasoning and tie the theories to the different parts of your plan.
  9. Evaluate how the components of the recommended compensation plan shape a consistent message to employees and summarize the message the plan conveys.

To complete this assignment, you must submit a 6-9 page paper that addresses the twelve elements of the task as numbered above and provide reasons for your recommendations.

The paper must be submitted as a Word document and it must follow APA style guidelines. By Monday, February 8, 2016, deliver your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox.

Assignment 2: Recycling, Reducing, and Reusing

In the Working Ahead section in Modules 1, 2, and 3, you were informed to collect items to be recycled and log a journal of these items. You were also instructed to select either Module 2 or Module 3 to collect these items.

Your assignment in this module is to submit your weeklong Recycling Journal, along with an analysis of your recycling efforts and an examination of the recycling process.

Be sure to examine what you have recycled in your chosen week and estimate how many grocery sacks of material you recycled—try to estimate the size. Results showing who recycled the most material will be posted by your facilitator in Module 5.

For this assignment, complete the following:

Part 1

Review your Recycling Journal for the week you selected. Write a report that covers the next two parts of this assignment.

Part 2

Based on what you identified as recyclable in one week and using this data, estimate how much garbage your entire locality or city could prevent sending to the landfill. Include the following:

  • What is the total population of your community? You may use reliable Internet resources to identify this information.
  • If everyone in your community recycled as much trash as you did for one week, how much garbage could your area recycle? To calculate this number, you can use your number and multiply it by the number of people in your community.
  • How much trash could your community save in a year? To calculate this number, multiply the weekly estimate for your community by the number of weeks in a year.
  • Do you think your community recycles enough? How can the US Government place more importance on recycling?

Part 3

Examine the process of recycling. Include the following:

  • Explain how recycled material is reused.
  • Describe what happens to recycled cans, bottles, and newspapers after they go to the recycling bin.
  • Examine the impact you have on creating renewed resources from these recycled items.

Identify, using simple heuristics, the indicators that show that the specific problems experienced by the three stores can be resolved through training.

FOR CREATIVE_WRITER ONLY

Assignment 2: Case Study—Training Assessment

Training assessment is an important task for HR personnel. Use the Argosy University online library and textbooks to read about training assessments.

Then, consider the following scenario:

You have recently been appointed as a training manager for the southeast region of a major supermarket chain in the U.S. Your territory includes 15 retail stores. Your responsibility involves working directly with store managers and other stakeholders to develop training solutions to meet specific needs of employees in various stores. This includes, but is not limited to, performing needs assessments, determining appropriate instructional design and training delivery methods, as well as implementing and evaluating training initiatives.

Three of the stores in your territory have missed sales goals for the last two quarters. All three stores have received low customer satisfaction scores and are experiencing increased employee turnover rates. The high employee turnover has resulted in the store managers hiring many new and relatively inexperienced sales associates, which further contributes to the problem.

The senior management team of the supermarket chain believes that training and development may help decrease employee turnover and increase customer satisfaction. You have been asked to assess training needs and develop a proposal to address the situation in these three stores.

Instructions:

Use scholarly resources and your learning, address the following:

  1. Identify, using simple heuristics, the indicators that show that the specific problems experienced by the three stores can be resolved through training.
  2. Design a needs assessment plan and identify three specific training initiatives you would recommend for these employees. Include the expected outcomes for the three training initiatives in your proposal.
  3. Select one of the specific training initiatives you identified and develop a budget of projected costs to implement this initiative.

Write a seven-to-nine-page training proposal in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc. By Wednesday, May 27, 2015, deliver your assignment to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox.
