Thesis Statement

The main Assignment in this course (due in Unit 6) is to draft a Term Paper titled “A Case Study of _________________” which uses a real-world case study of crisis intervention.

In order to prepare you for the Assignment, you are asked in this unit to submit a one sentence thesis statement for your paper.

As a reminder, the thesis statement (TS) is the most important sentence of any paper you write and should be written before any other part of your paper. Your TS is the beacon for the rest of the paper and the body of your paper must follow and reinforce your TS.

Because your TS is the most critical part of your paper, you should write and edit it before you write any other part of your paper. If your TS is good, it is likely that the rest of your paper is good; if your TS is bad, it is highly likely your whole paper will be bad.

Below is a good six-part test to determine if you have a good TS:

1. Does it answer the question clearly and directly?
2. Does it tell you what you are going to cover in your paper; is it a good road map for your paper?
3. Does it have a point of view and include your opinion?
4. Does it engage the reader? Is it interesting, and thus memorable to the reader?
5. Does it answer the “so what” question? Why should the reader care about your point of view? Why is this important to the reader?
6. Is the writing sharp, crisp, and to the point?

A TS is NOT the following:

• Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are used to establish a secure remote connection.  Examine whether or not they are totally secure and if not, what additional features would make them so.  Explain whether or not you would use a VPN to establish a remote connection with your business?  Why or why not?  Provide a rationale for your response.

Consider A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.  In her narrative, Rowlandson provides an account of the time she spent in captivity.  The narrative documents the abduction of Rowlandson and the death of some of her family members, and clearly one of the purposes of the work is to describe this terrible time in her life.  However, the narrative also serves to describe the Native American culture.  Rowlandson makes several observations about the similarities/differences in cultural traditions between the Native Americans and the European settlers.  Discuss one similarity and one difference that Rowlandson describes.  What is her attitude toward these differences?

Outsourcing: A Strategic Advantage?

Outsourcing may provide tremendous advantages for firms. It may allow companies to specialize, reduce costs, and focus narrowly on the core competencies they deem strategic; however, companies also have to think about what they may lose both qualitatively and quantitatively. For example, when outsourcing, managers need to be certain that what they source from outside is not a key component of their value proposition.

A way to reduce those risks is to use an approach called vertical integration. The meaning of vertical integration is developing the ability to produce goods or services previously purchased or to actually buy a supplier or a distributor. It can take two forms: backward and forward. These forms relate to how the corporation moves in its supply chain to pursue the vertical integration. If the movement is towards the suppliers, it is called backward integration. Conversely, it is known as forward integration.
