Do any of these firms appear to have a cash flow problem?

Eat at My Restaurant – Cash Flow

Read and complete case study 10-10, “Eat at My Restaurant” (attached) in your text. Address the following elements, which are also “required” elements at the end of the case study:

  • Comment on the difference between net cash provided by operating activities and net income.  Speculate on which number is likely to be the better indicator of long-term profitability.
  • Comment on the data reviewed for each firm.
  • Do any of these firms appear to have a cash flow problem?

Your answers should be in an essay form with an introduction and conclusion; ensure you are addressing each element clearly and thoroughly, following these guidelines:

  • Requirement (a) of the problem should be answered in general terms; you do not need to consider the 3 firms in the case.  However, you do need to make a choice and rationalize that choice.
  • When addressing requirement (b), you should make AT LEAST 4 observations on each firm, focusing on the cash flow ratios provided.
  • All information should be considered when answering requirement (c).  Even if you don’t think any one company is in “trouble,” you should still choose a company and support your choice.
  • Your paper should be 3-5 pages long and MUST BE IN APA with Reference page.

How do the concepts of macroeconomics help you understand the factors that affect shifts in supply and demand on the equilibrium price and quantity?

Supply and Demand Simulation

Option 1:

Complete the Supply and Demand Simulation.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper summarizing the content of the simulation and address the following:

  • Identify two microeconomics and two macroeconomics principles or concepts from the simulation/video.
  • Explain why you have categorized these selected principles or concepts as microeconomics or macroeconomics.
  • Identify at least one shift of the supply curve and one shift of the demand curve in the simulation/video.
  • Explain what causes the shifts, and how each shift affects the price, quantity, and decision making.

Include responses to the following:

  • How might you apply what you learned about supply and demand from the simulation/video to your workplace or your understanding of a real-world product with which you are familiar?
  • How do the concepts of microeconomics help you understand the factors that affect shifts in supply and demand on equilibrium price and quantity?
  • How do the concepts of macroeconomics help you understand the factors that affect shifts in supply and demand on the equilibrium price and quantity?
  • How does the price elasticity of demand affect a consumer’s purchasing and the firm’s pricing strategy as it relates to the simulation/video?

Should the antitrust authorities consider a “failing firm” defense from the merging parties?

Finance

Question 1.5

An arbitrage firm (A) notes that a bidder (B) whose stock is selling at $30 makes an offer for a target (T) selling at $40 to exchange 1.5 shares of B for 1 share of T. Shares to T rise to $44; B stays at $30. A sells 1.5 B short for $45 and goes long on T at $44. One month later the deal is completed with B at $30 and T at $45. What is A’s dollar and percentage annualized gain, assuming a required 50% margin and 8% cost of funds on both transactions?

Case 2.8 UNITED AIRLINES AND US AIRWAYS

On July 27, 2001, the U.S. Department of Justice blocked the merger of United Airlines and US Airways. According to Attorney General John Ashcroft, “if this acquisition were allowed to proceed, millions of customers … would have little choice but to pay higher fares and accept lower-quality air service.” Legislators on Capitol Hill applauded the decision of the DOJ to block the merger. The view was that competition along the East Coast would be greatly reduced because United Airlines and US Airways are the only two airlines in many markets offering connecting services between cities up and down the coast. When the merger was announced in May 2000, the stock price of US Airways increased from $26.31 to $49.00, nearly doubling in price. The bid by United Airlines was for $60 in cash. As investors expected the deal to take a considerably long time to complete, and because there was a good chance that the deal might be rejected by the regulations, the stock price of US Airways traded at a fairly large spread relative to the agreed-upon price. When the DOJ blocked the merger, the stock price of US Airways immediately dropped into the teens, and in August 2002, the company filed for federal bankruptcy protection. Interestingly, before the year 2002 had ended, United Airlines had also filed for federal bankruptcy protection. As of early 2003, the surviv-ability of both firms is questionable.

QUESTIONS

C2.8.1

The DOJ’s blocking of the merger rested on the case that it would greatly reduce competition along the East Coast because the merging parties were often the only two major airlines in some markets. Should potential competition, for example, arising from Southwest Airlines, a mover into the East Coast market, factor into the DOJ’s decision?

C2.8.2

US Airways is a failing firm and has a substantial probability of bankruptcy. Should the antitrust authorities consider a “failing firm” defense from the merging parties? That is, should mergers be allowed to occur if otherwise the target firm faces bankruptcy?

M1 Assignment 2: Simplifying Expressions and Solving Equations

By Saturday, January 9, 2016, complete the following assignment and post your response in this Discussion Area. Review and critique the work of at least two other students by the end of the module, and respond to comments.

Simplifying expressions and solving equations are at the heart of algebra. In order to effectively solve an equation, you need to be able to see how the expressions involved can be simplified. Equations can be thought of as mathematical models that represent some kind of process or relationship depending upon the area of application. To get to the answers you seek, you must solve the equation. In this assignment, we will practice, as a class, the processes you must go through to simplify expressions and solve equations.

In this Discussion Area, complete the following:

  • Your instructor will assign you 1 problem from each of the following exercise sets in the textbook. Look to the Discussion Area below for your assigned exercises.
  1. R.4 Exercise Set
  2. R.5 Exercise Set
  3. R.6 Exercise Set
  4. R.7 Exercise Set
  5. 1.4 Exercise Set
  6. 1.5 Exercise Set
  7. 1.6 Exercise Set
  • Work out each of the problems and post them to the Discussion Areabelow. You have a number of options for doing this:
  1. You can work out the problems in the discussion box.
  2. You can work the problems out in a Word document and attach them to the discussion box.
  3. You can work the problems out on a piece of paper, scan it into an image file, and then attach it to the discussion box.
  • Provide a detailed explanation to the class concerning how you solved each problem. Consider the following questions as you prepare your response:
  1. What steps did you follow to find the solution?
  2. Did you encounter any difficulties solving the problem?
  3. If you encountered problems, what resources did you access or use to help you solve this problem?
  4. What did you need to know or understand to solve the problem?
  5. What advice can you provide for someone who has difficulties solving similar problems?

All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.
