How Far Have You Come and What’s Next?

(1)   As you can see from this chapter, it is a big leap to stages 5 and 6! Take a few minutes to review the attributes of both. Do you find that you already meet some of these attributes? I would hope that you do, even if not always. How likely are you to eventually be at Level 5, or even 6? Do you have the time and motivation to meet all of the attributes?

(2)   Thinking back on the past 5 weeks, have you challenged your own thinking in a way that will change your life?

(3)   In what area are you strongest, and why are you strong in this area. In what way are you weakest, and why do you believe this is true?

(4)   If you can’t think of a personal example, should Olympic athletes strive for perfection?

(5)   Are you comfortable testing your own thinking processes?

(6)    When do you find it difficult to make decisions, and has anything in this chapter helped you?

(7)   Reflect on lessons learned and how they can be applied to your everyday life (professional and personal).

(8)   Develop a strategy to use critical thinking in the future

Discussion 1

Ace Heating and Cooling sells air conditioners. One unit, the Freezy, has a fair market value of $300. During a heat wave, Ace sells three Freezys for $1,000 to the following:

  • Breanna, single mom with poor credit, who can’t afford to pay cash for an AC unit. Breanna signs a contract to pay $1,000 on a credit plan, with an additional $500 in interest and financing fees.
  • Barry Bigshot, investment banker, who knows the price is way too high but who is far too important to waste his time driving around town trying to get a better deal.
  • Glamour Café, a fancy restaurant with an upscale clientele, whose AC went out in the middle of the lunch rush. The manager is desperate to get the place cooled down before people like Barry Bigshot come in for the evening happy hour.
  • Shady Rest Nursing Home, a business with a narrow profit margin. The manager isn’t happy about the price, but old people are very vulnerable to heat, and she’s afraid that her patients’ health could be compromised by any delay in getting AC.

Read the Ace Heating and Cooling scenario and answer the following questions:

  • Under UCC 2-302, who has the best chance of getting out of the contract due to unconsionability?
  • The symbol for justice features a woman wearing a blindfold illustrating that the law should be applied the same way regardless of who the parties are. Does the UCC rule seem to contradict this? Which approach do you think is more ethical?
  • Note that both Glamour and Shady Rest are businesses, and courts rarely find that contracts between two businesses are unconscionable. The rationale is that a business is a sophisticated entity, familiar with transactions and able to protect itself. Do you think Glamour and Shady Rest are in a comparable position in regard to this contract? Why or why not?

Discussion 2

Karen is shopping at Big Mart. She has with her an umbrella which is the same brand Big Mart carries. When a Big Mart employee, Steve, sees her leave with the umbrella without going through the checkout lane, he asks her to come back into the store. Steve says that he thinks Karen is shoplifting the umbrella. Karen tells him that she has had the umbrella for years and shows him marks of wear and tear. Steve apologizes and tells Karen she is free to go. Can Karen successfully sue for false imprisonment or defamation? From what you have learned about the relationship between a principal and an agent, analyze whether Steve or Big Mart could be liable because of Steve’s actions.

Consider the requirements imposed by Sarbanes-Oxley on corporate boards of directors. Do small businesses and privately held companies have ethical duties? If so, to whom would they owe this duty? Employees? Customers? Vendors? Should the law impose ethical requirements on small businesses or privately held companies or can the marketplace police unethical business behavior? Explain your justification for using the test based on the type of data and the level of measurement that the data lends to for the statistical analysis.

Stats week 8

For this assignment, you will undertake an analysis based on a self-designed fictitious study that utilizes statistical methodologies. You will first develop a fictitious problem to examine – it can be anything. For example, maybe you want to look at whether scores on a standardized college placement test (like the SAT) are related to the level of income a person makes 10 years after college; Or, whether those who participate in a Leadership Training program rated as better managers compared to those who do not; Or, whether ones political affiliation is related to gender. These are just a few examples; be creative and think about what piques your interest. You might also address a problem that you may want to look at in future research for a dissertation. You will use either EXCEL or SPSS to conduct the analysis.

Your analysis report should include the following components:

  1. Describe your research study.
  2. State a hypothesis.
  3. List and explain the variables you would collect in this study. There must be a minimum of three variables and two must meet the assumptions for a correlational analysis.
  4. Create a fictitious data set that you will analyze. The data should have a minimum of 30 cases, but not more than 50 cases.
  5. Conduct a descriptive data analysis that includes the following:
    1. a measure of central tendency
    2. a measure of dispersion
    3. at least one graph
  6. Briefly interpret the descriptive data analysis.
  7. Conduct the appropriate statistical test that will answer your hypothesis. It must be a statistical test covered in this course such as regression analysis, single t-test, independent t-test, cross-tabulations, Chi-square, or One-Way ANOVA. Explain your justification for using the test based on the type of data and the level of measurement that the data lends to for the statistical analysis.
  8. Report and interpret your findings. Use APA style and include a statement about whether you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.
  9. Copy and paste your Excel or SPSS data output and place it in an appendix.

Remember, the goal of this project is to show what you have learned in the course. Therefore, this project becomes a cumulative learning project where you can demonstrate what you have learned through all the previous assignments, readings and video presentations that you have watched.

Length: 12-15 pages not including title and reference pages

Would it be possible for a person to be perfectly good and yet cause harm to innocent people?

Why Be Moral?

After reading this chapter, it should be clear that not all philosophers agree on “why” we ought to be moral, but regardless of whether it is a matter of principles or virtues, they can agree that mortality is necessary for a functioning society.

In book 2 of his Republic (2.359a–2.360d), Plato has one of his characters relate a story about a mythical Ring of Gynges. When a shepherd finds and wears the magical, mythical ring, he discovers that he can adjust it on his hand and become invisible. With this new gift of invisibility, he eventually seduces the queen, murders the king, and becomes the king himself. The point of the myth is that if any person believes he can get away with immoral behavior, he will behave immorally. It is only the awareness of others around us that makes a person choose to be moral.

In a well-developed essay, provide an argument which addresses for the following questions:

  1. What relationship, if any, is there between “doing good” and “being good”?
  2. Would it be possible for a person to be perfectly good and yet cause harm to innocent people?
  3. Could a person be wicked even if he or she never caused any harm at all?
  4. If a person does good things for other people but does them for bad reasons (such as fame, wealth, or even just the selfish desire to feel good about himself), why or why not do the wrong reasons or motivations negate the good he has done?
  5. Could someone be a morally good person but not enjoy the Good Life? (You will ned to define what you mean by the “Good Life.”)
  6. Be sure to discuss the philosophical ideas of at least two moral theories while addressing the prompt questions.

Please ensure that your essay addresses each component of the assigned questions and that your answer is well-organized, uses excellent, college-level prose, and makes judicious use of textual evidence. Your essay must follow APA formatting and should be 500-750 words long.
