  1. An expert reviews a sample of 10 scientific articles (n = 10) and records the following numbers of error in each article: 0, 4, 2, 8, 2, 3, 1, 0, 5, and 7. Compute the SS, the variance, and the standard deviation for this sample using the definitional and computational formulas.
  2. Radel and colleagues (2011) conducted a study of how feeling overly controlled makes you desire—even unconsciously—more freedom. In their study, 52 Canadian undergraduates played a video game in a laboratory and were randomly assigned to either:

  1. an automony deprivation condition, in which they were told to follow instructions precisely, constantly given instructions over a loudspeaker, and carefully observed on everything they did.
  2. a neutral condition, which was much more laid back.

After this activity, they were asked to do a “lexical decision task” (a standard approach for measuring unconscious responses) in which they were shown a series of words and nonwords in random order and had to press “C” if it was a real word or “N” if not. Half of the real words were related to autonomy (e.g., freedom, choice) and half were neutral (e.g., whisper, hammer). The key focus of the study was on how long it took people to press the button *(“response latency”) for each kind of real word, averaged over the many words of each type. The table below shows the mean and standard deviation across the participants of these four categories of results. Thus, for example, 782 milliseconds (thousandths of a second) is the average time it took participants in the autonomy-deprived condition to respond to the autonomy-related words, and 211 is the standard deviation across the 26 participants’ average response time in that condition. Explain the numbers in this table to a person who has never had a course in statistics. (Be sure to explain some specific numbers, as well as the general principle of the mean and standard deviation.) For your interest, the pattern of results shown here supported the researchers’ hypothesis: “Relative to a neutral instructional climate, a controlling climate thwarting the need for autonomy…enhanced accessibility for autonomy-related words.” (p.924).

Research a company that has used a purchasing strategy to improve the financial impact of the company.

BUS612: Advanced Project Management, Wk 4 Assignment

Pricing Decisions

The price of an item is an important component of decision making in procurement but is not the only factor for a final decision.  Research a company that has used a purchasing strategy to improve the financial impact of the company. Write a three- to four-page (excluding title page and reference pages), APA formatted paper that evaluates the overall components of the company’s pricing strategy.  Include relevant examples from external research to support your evaluation.  Where necessary, use scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library, in addition to the textbook, to obtain support for your evaluation.

Calculate the expected return on the MVE portfolio. In matrix form this equation.

Statistic problem

  1. Log into WRDS (Wharton) database, using the following information:

Userid: sseechar

Pwd: Plza.123

  1. Choose CRSP (Center for the Research of Security Prices) database
  2. Choose North America
  3. Choose Equities
  4. Choose Monthly data files

  1. Download data on monthly returns (choose Holding Period Return variable) for the most recent 5-year period on four companies (or mutual funds, ETFs, etc.) from CRSP database into the Excel file. Choose companies from unrelated industries. Use your common sense here. For example, computer hardware and software industries are closely related, but computer hardware and food industries are not. Make sure that your dates are consistent across all four stocks, i.e. you select returns for the same 5-year period.

You can download similar data from Bloomberg

  1. Using commands in the Excel Functions menu (click on fx button), calculate expected monthly returns on all three stocks (use AVERAGE function), their variances (VAR function), standard deviations (STDEV function), arrange them into variance-covariance matrix.

The more efficient way to calculate the variance-covariance matrix is using cov-matrix.xlam application, posted on BB. You need to download this application onto your computer and then open it within your Excel program. Don’t forget to enable macros.

In this example, Variance-Covariance is a 4 by 4 table. Suppose that it is located in cells (C98:F101), that is rows 98 through 101, columns C through F. On the diagonal of this matrix are variance estimates, on off-diagonal are covariance terms (we will use these addresses later in mmult command).

  1. Now find the correlation coefficient between each pair of companies (CORREL function). Arrange them into the 4 by 4
  • Correlation matrix

  1. Annualize expected returns, variances and covariances. It means you have to multiply monthly expected returns, variances and covariances by 12. We can do this because we assume markets to be efficient at least in a weak form. Market efficiency means that monthly returns are independent of each other; that is the correlation coefficient between returns in one month and returns in any other month is 0. The annual standard deviation is just the square root of the annual variance. The annual correlation coefficient is the same as the monthly correlation coefficient.

You can multiply the entire variance-covariance matrix by 12. Below is the link to the excellent tutorial on matrix manipulations in excel:

http://facweb.cs.depaul.edu/mobasher/classes/csc575/assignments/MatrixOperations-Excel2007.pdf

  1. Report monthly and annual statistics, calculated in (3) — (5). Present annualized variances and covariances in the variance-covariance.

Part 2

  1. In the next four columns specify weights of the four stocks in your portfolio. Remember, that the weight of the forth stock in the portfolio can be expressed as w4 = 1- w1 – w2– w3. Alternatively, you can write a weight constraint into the next column

You can use any set of numbers as a starting point.

  1. In the next three columns enter the formula for the variance, standard deviation and expected return (in that order) of the portfolio of four stocks:

(1)

(2)

(3)

The more efficient way to do calculate the variance or the portfolio and its expected return is to use matrices:

We will use the following matrix form for this equation:

(4)

In equation (4), w denotes 1 by 4 row vector of weights, W stands for 4 by 4 variance-covariance matrix, and w’ is a transpose of w, a 4 by 1 column vector of weights.

  1. To do this in Excel:

(i)       Enter the vector (row of four) weights for the four assets, for example in B109:E109.  You can start from any set of numbers. In the next cell (F109) Enter the weight constraint, i.e. enter the formula:

=SUM(B109:E109).

(ii)     Now use the following command in Excel to perform matrix multiplication to find the variance of your portfolio

=MMULT(MMULT(B109:E109,$C$98:$F$101),TRANSPOSE(B109:E109))

Press simultaneously CTRL-SHIFT and while holding these two keys, also press ENTER. Suppose that the result of your operation is located in cell G109.

  1. Copy everything 10 times (next ten rows).

  1. Use Solver to find the weights of the minimum variance efficient (MVE) portfolio of your four chosen stocks in the first row. To do this, you simply minimize the variance of the portfolio, no constraints on the expected return of the portfolio needed.

Steps:

  1. Go to Data, find Analysis and click on Solver
  2. In Solver window, in “Set Objective”, enter G109 (this is where you have your variance function) and click on Min. Your objective is to minimize the variance of the portfolio.
  3. In “By Changing Cells” enter the range of weights that Solver can change, i.e B109:E109.
  4. Add the constraint on weights: reference cell F109 (sum of all four weights) should be equal to 1.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the next cell, H109, find the annualized standard deviation of the MVE portfolio.

  1. Calculate the expected return on the MVE portfolio. In matrix form this equation is:

(5)

In (5) E stands for the 1 by 4 row vector of expected returns and w’ is a column vector of weights.

To do this in Excel, in cell I109 write:

=MMULT($B$92:$E$92,TRANSPOSE(B109:E109))

where the first array of cells contains annualized expected returns on individual hedge fund strategies. Done forget to press simultaneously CTRL-SHIFT and while holding these two keys, also press ENTER.

  1. Use Solver to calculate efficient portfolios for each level of expected returns. That is, increase expected returns above the level of E[RMVE] in small increments (for example, the next portfolio’s expected return would be 1% higher than the expected return on the MVE portfolio). This new return enters Solver as your constraint. You need to find a portfolio that has the smallest possible standard deviation and pays your chosen expected return. Mathematically, you solve the following optimization problem:

(6)

subject to:

E[Rp] = A,

where A is your chosen expected return.

You will need to repeat your optimization with Solver 10 more times, each time increasing return by 1%. Don’t use paste and copy at this point.

In Solver, the steps are exactly the same as in Step 10, except that in the “Subject to constraints” window, you now need to enter the return constraint. Click on “Add”. The constraint window will open. In the “Cell Reference”, enter I110 (in our example the expected return on the next portfolio is located in this cell) and choose =. In the “Constraint” enter =I109+0.01. This means that return on your next portfolio should be

Website Migration Project

Tony’s Chips has recently been sold to a new independent company. The new company has hired you to manage a project that will move the old Website from an externally hosted solution to an internal one. The company’s leadership is very concerned about redundancy for their site, insisting that a back-up site be available as a failover in case the main site goes down. In addition, they want the site redesigned to allow customers to order products online.

As part of your job, you must complete a 10-to-15 page paper that follows this project through the system development life cycle (SDLC). This assignment will require you to do the following:

  • Discuss what it will take to build a Web architecture, move an existing Website with minimal downtime, and provide a disaster recovery solution to ensure the site is always available.
    • The Web architecture should describe and justify operating system choices (i.e., Linux, Apache, MYSQL, PHP, Windows, IIS, SQL, etc.).
  • Evaluate alternatives to the company self-hosting the site.
  • Build a Gantt chart using Microsoft Project or equivalent software, showing all tasks associated with implementing the Website.
  • The chart should include a minimum of five (5) tasks, each with three (3) sub-tasks.
  • Explain and justify the system architecture you have selected.
  • Illustrate the system architecture using Visio or equivalent software.
  • Create a use case that documents the event of a customer ordering a bag of chips from the new Website.
  • The use case should include a graphical representation using Visio or equivalent software and a text description of the events.
  • Discuss the support operations that the internally hosted Website will require after implementation.
  • Explain how you will evaluate the performance of the new site and the success of your project.

The specific Course Learning Outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Design high-level logical system characteristics (user interface design, design of data, and information requirements).
  • Use contemporary CASE tools in process and data modeling.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in systems analysis and development.
  • Write clearly and concisely about Systems Analysis and Development topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

Assignment 2.2: Justification Report – Part 2

Due Week 3 and worth 150 points

In Part 1 of your Justification Report assignment, you built up the following sections: Problem Statement, Overview of Alternatives, Criteria, and Methods. In Part 2, you will revise Part 1 based on your instructor’s suggestions and add to it the following sections: Evaluation of Alternatives, Findings and Analysis, and References.

Use the basic outline below to draft your paper. Organize your responses to each question under the following section headings:

  • Evaluation of Alternatives (for Questions 1-3)
  • Findings and Analysis (for Questions 4-5)
  • References (for Question 6)

Using the provided template, write Part 2 of a single-spaced report in which you:

  1. Include and revise the sections from Assignment 2.1 (Problem Statement, Overview of Alternatives, Criteria, and Methods) per instructor suggestions.
  2. Research the two (2) alternatives (i.e. possible solutions) that you’ve identified in your Part 1 Evaluation of Alternatives section. Record bibliographic information during research.
  3. Example: You might research other organizations that have attempted similar solutions to the problem you have identified and explore the results of those experiments.
  4. Use what you discover in your research to evaluate each alternative by each of your five (5) criteria.
  5. Example: If your research revealed that four (4) companies similar to yours increased productivity after allowing their workers to telework from home three days per week, you might conclude that one of your suggested alternatives – in this case, the option to telework from home three days per week – satisfies one of your criterion of “Productivity” as a high-potential solution to a problem you’ve identified (of decreased worker morale and productivity at Doe’s Electronics). However, additional research might frustrate a recommendation of this alternative if it is found to fall short of other criteria while a second alternative fares better. For instance, a telework alternative might be found to be too costly to implement; too frustrating for consumers who prefer daily, in-person customer service; or too divergent from the company’s brand, “Always there for you!”
  6. Organize the assignment by your criteria. Explain in narrative form how each of your two (2) alternatives stacks up against your first criterion. Next, explain how each alternative stacks up against your second criterion, etc.
  7. Example: An abbreviated outline of what this longer section might look like based on the above example is below (Note: Only the first two [2] of five [5] required criteria are included to give you a feel for the structure). Your researched findings, represented as circled bullets below, should be explained in two to five (2-5) sentences. Include in-text citations and follow up with References in APA style):

    Evaluation of Alternatives

o    Productivity

o    Alternative A: Telework from home three (3) days per week

o    {narrate findings based on research article 1 here}

o    Alternative B: Offer two (2) extra Floating Holidays to each employee per year

o    {narrate findings based on research article 2 here}

o    Cost

  1. Briefly summarize in narrative form the major discoveries that emerged from the Evaluation of Alternatives section.
  2. Include a chart like the ones below to illustrate at a glance:

Figure 1: Alternatives Analyzed by Criteria

Criteria Telework Option Floating Holiday Option
Productivity Very high Negligible increase
Cost Very high Moderate

  2. Include an APA style (6th edition) References page that documents the two (2) sources (minimum) that you used and cited in-text in your Evaluation of Alternatives section. You may use secondary resources, or you may include one primary source and one secondary source. Remember that both in-text citations and References must be included (to avoid plagiarism) whenever you are directly quoting, summarizing, or paraphrasing researched material.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
