What will happen to the prices of goods and services produced with minimum wage labor?

LABOR MARKET

This week we are going to examine what happens in a market when the government intervenes in the market and introduces price controls. In particular we are going to examine what happens when the minimum wage is increased.

A minimum wage is a Price Floor. When a price floor is imposed on a market the price can be higher than the price floor, but not lower than the price floor.

In the labor market, the price is the wage rate. Thus, a minimum wage above the equilibrium wage increases workers wages, but it also decreases the quantity demanded of labor. In particular, it reduces the quantity demanded of unskilled and low skilled labor, especially youth labor.

Retirement in the Unites States today forms a normal part of the life cycle. Most people will spend some time in retirement. Atchley and Barusch (2003) describe retirement as a series of stages. This five-stage model takes a life-course perspective on retirement. It shows the interplay between a person’s past, his or her current life, and external events.

The population of older adults in the United States has grown more than ten times in size from 1900 to 2003, from 3.1 million to 36 million people. Projections show that this population will more than double from the year 2000 to 2050, increasing from 35 million to 86.7 million (Novak, 2009).

Psychological profiling is not a new concept. It has been practiced for centuries and has been the foundation of popular fiction from Sherlock Holmes to Clarice Starling. The Snook, Cullen, Bennell, Taylor, & Gendreau (2008) and Kocsis (2003) articles (I HAVE ATTACHED THEM BOTH) outline many of the preconceptions and misperceptions surrounding the field of forensic psychology as it is used in contemporary law enforcement. Television programs such as Law and Order, NCIS, Criminal Minds and the Mentalist have made psychological profiling a popular pastime. While the line between fact and fiction can often be thin and tenuous, the impacts that fiction and/or misinformation can have on reality can be enormous. What impact has there been, if any, on the public’s perceptions and beliefs about criminal behavior and the impact on law enforcement investigations, prosecution and trials due to the use of psychological profiling? Are these impacts positive or negative? Provide an example from your review of a scholarly journal to support your discussion.

This week I want you to draft a memo to your employees.  The reading from the text this week discussed planning and researching as well as writing reports and proposals.  We are going to apply this knowledge into budget preparation.  Please read chapter 1 and 2 in Budgeting Basics and Beyond. These 2 chapters will give you a great foundation as to what makes a good budget.  For this assignment, please assume that you are the manager of a property management company.   You need your staff to put together a budget for you.  This property management company is responsible for managing several office buildings, and you need the property managers to provide you with their projected costs for the coming year.  A few things that you will want to provide guidance on:

  • format of their submission should be a PowerPoint presentation
  • due date
  • do you want the information broken down quarterly or annually?
  • do you want them to provide explanations for every cost, or just those over a certain amount?
  • think about the type of costs and income that you would like managers to address, you can be creative here … the point of the assignment is for you to communicate effectively, not master the accounting system of a property management company.

While this list is not all inclusive, it should give you an idea of the type of information you will want to ask for from your employees.   While I do not expect you to submit an actual budget to me, this is an exercise in providing good instruction to your employees.  The better your instructions, the more accurate their response.  In order to provide accurate instructions, you will need a basic understanding of the budgeting process.  Please feel free to seek out additional information as you feel is necessary.  This link will send you to a typical budget for an office building.  This should give you an idea of the type of information you will want your employees to provide to you.
