Article Review

The purpose of an article review is to provide the academic community with a description, summary, and evaluation of the completed work. For the article review, students will assume the role of an expert who is critically evaluating contemporary research in the field of psychology. Students will incorporate material from across the course, analyzing and applying theories and principles of psychology, into a cohesive and well-written article review. This learning activity will facilitate the development of research skills, critical thinking, and writing skills that are necessary to success in the field of psychology. The article for review was chosen in Week Two of the course and must be used in this review. Carefully read the selected article, and then write the Article Review.
Begin with a well-written introduction to the article that:
Analyzes the article and identifies the professional area of psychology it represents
Assesses the roles of psychology professionals within this area and describes whether or not the article clearly and correctly represents these roles.
Evaluate the theoretical perspective on which the study is based
Detail the hypotheses presented in the study or the relationship of interest
Describe the sample(s) presented in the study (how participants were obtained, selected, sample size, etc.)
Discuss where the study was conducted: university setting (lab), organization (field), etc.
Examine the ethical concerns in the study using the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct as a guide.
Summarize the results of the study. Be certain to specify the findings and whether or not the hypotheses were supported.
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the study (usually found in the discussion section of the article).
Evaluate possible contemporary applications of the results within the article
Create a conclusion that includes a synopsis of professional insights about the study.

However, it is sometimes debated that public policy intrudes on an aspect of our development known as autonomy as outlined in Erikson’s Developmental Stages.

part II Changing the Course of Psychological Development

Read the PSY605: Mila Singer Life Story document. Choose one aspect of Mila’s life to alter. This element can be an event, a personal characteristic, an environmental factor, or an aspect of the timeline. Part II Program Proposal

Beginning the Proposal Process

Choose an area of interest. Students will choose a general track and define a specific issue within the track that is of interest to them and presents a contemporary problem to be solved. Please see the Program Proposal Tracks and Topics in Developmental Psychology document to view the tracks (Community, Clinical/Counseling, and Education) and suggested issues within each track for the proposal. Once the track and issue have been chosen, specific criteria will need to be identified.

Identify the target population. Regardless of the track and issue chosen, a target population must be identified for the proposal. Identify the target population associated with the chosen issue. Within the target population, choose the developmental stage that will act as the focus for the proposal. Many programs may directly and/or indirectly influence people in different stages; however, it is important to select the stage that is most applicable to the specific program being proposed. For example, in a program for adults who are caring for their elderly parents, the focus is on the adults (likely in middle adulthood) so a middle adulthood focus would be most appropriate for that program.

Identify the geographic location where the program will be deployed. Programming will be directly influenced by the location in which it will take place. For example, a child safety program in a rural farming community will likely have different objectives and needs than a child safety program in a large metropolitan city.

Research a minimum of five peer-reviewed articles on the chosen issue in the Ashford University Library. All sources utilized for the Program Proposal must have been published within the last 10 years.

Creating the Program Proposal

Program proposals take on many forms and styles. Creativity is encouraged because it not only tests the boundaries of what is possible for solutions to various issues, but also typically increases the chances for funding. Regardless of the issue being addressed, the Program Proposal must incorporate the following headings (noted in bold) and include the supporting information that is detailed beneath each heading.

Proposal Summary

Under this heading, provide a summary paragraph that presents the program, its objectives, and how the program will address an area of need in the identified geographic location and issue of interest.

Organization Description and Qualifications

Under this heading, act as an individual representative and identify the community agency submitting this proposal.
•Explain what qualifies the agency to create this specific program (education, experience, history, etc.).

•Describe how the agency plans to promote the success of this program and what resources the agency has access to or can provide.

While this community agency will be a construct rather than a true community agency, the information and attributes described must align with the qualifications expected of a true agency of that nature and the qualifications should support the goals of the proposal.

Background

Under this heading, explain human development in the context of both historical and current trends by presenting a brief summary of the relevant research published within the last 10 years. Within the summary:
•Identify other active programs in the geographic area to eliminate duplication of current programs.

•Evaluate the unique scholarly perspectives and research in the field of developmental psychology as they relate to the specific program being proposed.

•Address how the scholarly information collected illustrates a clear need for this program.

Program Narrative and Procedures

Under this heading, describe the program in detail. Include the overall vision, the intended target population, and geographical location, and specify how this program will be introduced to the community.
•Provide a step-by-step outline of what will be implemented and detail how each step of the outline will be accomplished.

Prior to completing this discussion, please read Chapter 21 from the Lerner, Easterbrooks, Mistry, and Weiner (2013) e-book and the review the list of programs included in the Federal Program Inventory published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2013) required for this week.

For this discussion, you will take on the role of a developmental psychologist reviewing an existing program to assess the program’s efficacy for the developmental stage(s) of the target audiences identified. Using the Federal Program Inventory as a guide, search for a human services program at work either in your local area or online. Find a program of interest to you that serves the need(s) of a specific population of individuals. You may want to refer to the Program Proposal Tracks and Topics in Developmental Psychology document for ideas on the types of programs to look for in your search.

Introduction
Begin with an introduction that briefly describes your topics, chosen articles, and the principle of development from Baltes (1987) to be addressed. The introduction should end with a succinct thesis statement that presents the idea of how each unique topic within developmental psychology can be applied to your chosen principle of development.

Summary and Critical Evaluation
In this section, you will summarize each article by highlighting the purpose, research questions and hypotheses, methods, results, and conclusions drawn regarding the topic the article represents. Then, evaluate the merits of the article, including the strengths, weakness and limitations, and future directions of the research. Additionally, evaluate whether you had any issues with accuracy or clarity in reading the article, and address any remaining questions you have. Finally, evaluate any ethical considerations that may or may not have been addressed by the authors of the articles.

Synthesis of Principles Defining the Lifespan Development Approach
In this section, you will integrate one of the principles of development which state that development is lifelong, multidimensional, multidirectional, gains and losses, contextual and historical, and/or multidisciplinary (Baltes, 1987). To do so, you will first describe your chosen principle and explain how it can be applied to each of your five topics. Construct clear arguments regarding how your chosen principle drives, and is influenced by key elements presented in the articles.

Conclusion
Synthesize the findings described in your five articles into a succinct conclusion in which you reaffirm your thesis statement and describe how the principle of development discussed in your review influences our understanding of human development across all five chosen topics. Address any remaining questions and overarching implications of the studies with regard to future directions in developmental psychology.
