After watching the TED video and reading the section about the Sociological Imagination, take the viewpoint of an outside observer to examine your life.

First, pick one personal experience that was meaningful to you.

Second, pick a viewpoint different from your own. It can be another gender, race, nationality, or maybe someone from a different subculture. Finally, write about the three points listed below.

Write a 500 or more word paper discussing each assignment point listed below.

1) Describe the personal experience as an outsider might describe it. (hint: depending on what you choose and the perspective you choose, this may require a little research)

2) Describe how that experience was influenced by society structures (e.g. historical events, religion, or traditions)

3) Finally review the four main perspectives and theorists related to those perspectives. What theory most applies to the personal experience you described and why do you think this theory applies?

Your paper must include a title sheet and at least 2 outside references.  You may use one reference from the internet but the 2nd reference must be from the Grantham University online library.  Only the body of the paper will count in your word requirement.

To help you begin your first paper, I have given you an example of a personal experience, the structure that helped to shape this event, and the theory that I would apply to it. Although what is listed below is an outline, I would like you to write in paragraph form.

Example:

Personal experience: wedding

Viewpoint: perspective of a person from the subcontinent India

1) Description: Wedding itself was short, crowd was small, took place outside of hometown, and the bride wore white

2) Social Structure: institution of marriage, marriage laws, and religious traditions

3) What theory: functionalism Why this theory: functionalism supports social structure that is functional for society and marriage is functional for families and households

Compare and contrast the: 3 movies Birth of a Nation, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Citizen Kane. Discuss the political content of these films. What is the political message of each movie? Hoe does the film reflect social and political reality of the era? What was the political impact of these movies at the time of their release?  PLEASE add your interpretation of how politics was reflected and resolved in film. DO NOT provide a plot summation of the movies. Analyze the political content and intent contained in these films.

According to the articles in your assigned readings, the most significant question considering all three groups of stakeholders is: Who should be in charge? More specifically, context is provided to argue where control should be assigned. Proponents of local control believe control belongs at the district level through oversight of school boards and teacher unions. Opponents of local control believe administration oversight belongs to state departments and political offices.

• Write a 3-page argument on where control of educational issues belongs. You may argue for state and federal control, local control, or a compromise between the two.

Engendering positive social change is at the core of the school’s mission. As future researchers and scholar-practitioners in your fields, you have likely had, and will continue to have, opportunities to apply your learning experiences to making a difference in the lives of others.

This week, you consider the relationship between research and social change and the role of the researcher as a social change agent. You also reflect on your current research skills to determine and prepare for the next steps to take in becoming a researcher.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review the “Social Change, “Researcher Advice,” and the “Researcher Skills” media segments.
• Reflect upon your progress and growth as a researcher. Consider the questions and statements that follow.
• How far have you come since the beginning of the course? What new learning about the research process has most surprised you? What impression or attribute about the research process is different than you imagined it to be prior to taking this course?
• Where are opportunities for improvement to focus on as you continue taking courses in research methods and work toward your thesis or dissertation?
• For Ph.D. students only: Where are you in your residency requirement? What is your next residency milestone? What do you hope to achieve at your next residency?
• How do you now understand the relationship between research and social change? How do you see yourself as a social change agent?
• What are your next steps in becoming a successful researcher and graduate student? What challenges do you anticipate, and how might you overcome them?

With these thoughts in mind:

Post an explanation of the relationship between research and social change. Then, explain the role of a researcher as an agent of positive social change. Next, describe your plans for the next steps you need to take in becoming a successful researcher and graduate student.

For this Discussion, locate and select two scholarly articles—one article should discuss strategies for innovation in strategic planning and one article should discuss strategies for strategic planning in virtual environments. Consider how you might apply these strategies within an organization to effect positive social change.

Post a brief description of the two articles that you selected, including strategic planning strategies for innovation and virtual environments. Explain how you might apply these strategies to effect positive social change.

For this assignment you will conduct a comparative DuPont analysis of two companies. Using a search engine, find one large corporation included in the S&P 500. Then, find one of its largest competitors. Go to the investor relations portion of each corporation’s homepage and find their most recent annual report. Complete a DuPont analysis by calculating the ROE, ROA, the profit margin, total asset turnover, and equity multiplier. Also, critique the differences between the two corporations in approximately 100 words.

 

Part 2

Using the most recent income statements (annual) for the two corporations from Part 1 of the assignment, calculate a common size analysis. Then, discuss the differences in the two corporations in approximately 75 words. Insert your 75-word discussion just below your analysis.
