Week 8
For this assignment you will write a paper relating a topic in physical science to your career field or other real-world practical application. You must use at least three different sources, and cite them in the paper and on a separate references page.
Introduction
Instructions: In this section, you must do the following:
- Present relevant background or contextual material. (Why are you writing on this topic? What is the importance of this topic in terms of your studies, your profession, your life, your activities, etc.)
- Define terms or concepts when necessary. ( Do not use acronyms in the introduction, if you plan to use acronyms later in the body of your paper, you must define them now. Any technical term should also be defined. If you are writing about a particular concept, ie. Newton’s Third Law of Motion, then you need to explain the concept here in the introduction)
- Explain the focus of the paper and your specific purpose. (What will your paper include in terms of research about the topic? What are the key areas of interest you will be presenting to the readers? What audience is this paper intended for? What do you hope to achieve by researching and writing about this topic?)
- Reveal your plan of organization. (How will you guide your readers? What is the outline or plan of flow your paper will follow? The best way to do this is to lay out the key headings of the subtopics that you intend to cover in the main body of the paper)
Body (I would suggest putting down the Sub-headings for each key areas you are covering in your main text body)
Instructions: In this section, you must do the following:
- Consider at least 2.5 pages of text – Times New Roman font, size 12, double spacefor your main text body section.
- Build your essay around points you want to make – flow of ideas and cohesion of ideas are important here. Do not try to arrange information from sources in a cut and paste manner. Read the information from sources, put the information in your own words and then organize the information around the key points/topics that you wish to emphasize. In order to do this, you must draft the paper first. Drafting is not the final copy. A draft helps you organize the information. The final paper is a polished copy that shows how paragraphs are linked, how information is organized to support ideas and thoughts and how the key topics are covered in a cohesive and logical manner.
- Integrate at least three sources into your writing . These three sources must come from valid sources. Do not use wikepedia, Yahoo answers, Ask.com; Answers.com or any websites that do not have a credited author listed. If you are in doubt, post a question on the Final Paper Thread and let me help you evaluate your sources.
- Summarize, analyze, explain, and evaluate referenced work rather than merely reporting it. (You summarize information when you put it in your own words, rather than cutting and pasting direct wordings from sources. You analyze the information when you examine it critically, ask questions about the information, challenge it or locate other supporting sources to validate it. You evaluate information when you examine it for usefulness, validity, errors, or future application). Simply putting down the researched information without this personal perspective means that you are only reporting the information.)
- Move up and down the “ladder of abstraction” from generalization to varying levels of detail back to generalization. (The general level is the writing in the introduction section, the details are in the body section and the generalization is in the conclusion section.)
Conclusion
Instructions: In this section, you must do the following:
- A summary of the information is done here. Summarize the key points you made in the paper for your reader.
- If prior to your conclusion you have not yet explained the significance of your findings or if you are proceeding inductively, use the end of your paper to add your points up and to explain their significance. Physics is a field of study that is applicable to many aspect of your life. This is where you need to tie the research back to practical applications, whether it be in leisure, sports, work, school, daily activities, etc.
- Move from a detailed to a general level of consideration that returns the topic to the context provided by the introduction. A good conclusion will reiterate the key points mentioned in the introduction.
- Suggest what about this topic needs further research. This is important because it shows a higher level of thinking. In this area, you would want to take the information you researched and presented to the next level by either theorizing or providing concrete applications of the topic of research for the future. Again, this could be future applications in school, work, industries, recreational activities, etc.
Personal Evaluation
Instructions: In this section, you must do the following:
- State your opinion in the first sentence of the paragraph.
- In the body of the paragraph, give at least three reasons why you think and feel as you do. Include both facts and examples to supportyour opinion. To support your opinion, you will need an in text citation from one of your sources.
- End with a sentence that sums up and restates your opinion.
- Suggest what, if any, improvement should be applied to your topic.
- Write an appreciation statement regarding the connection of physical science to the world in which we live; discuss how this topic has helped you in your career or everyday life.
- Most importantly, keep in mind: this paper must be in your own words.
References (on a separate page)
- Citeat least three sources using APA format. If you do not know how to do in text citations or how to set up a particular source in APA, post a question in the Final Paper Thread in the discussion or send me an email and I can help you.
