  • Operational Plan

    SHARE

You probably have a business plan, but you need an operational plan to define your business’s day-to-day operations.

An operational plan forms part of the business’s strategic plan and is important for effective business leadership. It describes how the work will be done, the workflow from input to end results, including the resources that will be used along the way, all of which are required for success.

Streamlined business systems also defines how you will deal with risks, and how you will ensure sustainability of the project’s achievements.

An operational plan also explains how, or what portion of, a strategic plan will be put into operation during a given operational period.

    What is an Operational Plan?

While strategic planning provides the vision, direction and goals for the business, operational planning translates that into the everyday workflow of the business that will hopefully produce the outcomes defined by the strategy.

Simply put, operational planning is the conversion of strategic goals into managed execution. It deals specifically with the internal operations and resources necessary to produce your company’s product or service.

Operational Plan: 4 Steps to Success

An operational plan addresses four questions:

    • Where are we now?
    • Where do we want to be?
    • How do we get there?
    • How do we measure our progress?

The key components of a complete operational plan include:

    1. Human capital. The staff and skills required to implement your project, as well as current and potential sources of these resources.
    2. Financial requirements. The funding required to implement your project, your current and potential sources of these funds.
    3. Risk assessment. What risks exist and how they can be addressed.
    4. Estimate of project lifespan, sustainability and exit strategy. How long your project will last, when and how you will exit your project, and how you will ensure sustainability of your project’s achievements.

    Operational plans should contain:

    • Clear objectives
    • Activities to be delivered
    • Quality standards
    • Desired outcomes
    • Staffing and resource requirements
    • Implementation timetables
    • A process for monitoring progress.

    Why have an operational plan?

An operational plan is important because it helps your team to:

    • Be clear about where you will get the necessary resources
    • Use those resources efficiently
    • Clearly define the most critical resource requirements.
      • Reduce risks where possible, and prepare contingency plans where necessary.
      • Think about the long-term future of the project, including its sustainability.

Who should prepare an operational plan?

Operational plans should be prepared by the people who will be involved in the implementation. There is often a need for cross-departmental dialogue as plans created by one part of the organisation inevitably have implications for other parts.

    • A project administrator or finance manager should be involved in defining financial requirements
    • Human resources should be involved in assessing HR and capacity needs
    • HR, IT or operations staff should be engaged in discussions of processes, procedures and systems.

Efficient operational planning and implementation calls for ongoing open communication between the project team and these other staff.

Identify and discuss two specific disparities for the racial or ethnic group under consideration.

complete week 3-3

Cultural Health Disparities Research-Based Paper

Your readings to this point have documented significant differences—disparities—in health care provided for different racial and ethnic groups. This assignment provides an opportunity to reflect on, analyze, and write about group differences and health disparities.

Textbook authors Pérez and Luquis (p. 24) suggest, “[t]he reasons why we observe these disparities are not clearly understood and may be due to other factors as individual choices, differences in disease processes, or systemic barriers to care, or to any combination of these factors.”

Given that thinking, imagine that you have been asked by the regional director of health care services to select and evaluate ethnic group diseases and illnesses, disparities, behaviors, and probable causes.

Your research-based assignment is to identify and discuss health care disparities and wellness issues for a particular cultural group:

Select a population for which there is evidence of health care disparities. For this population:

  • Identify and describe two diseases with high incidence for the cultural (ethnic or racial) group.
    • Describe how the group is being affected.
    • What strategies are currently being employed or considered to increase wellness?
    • What additional considerations do you think might be useful?
  • Identify and discuss two specific disparities for the racial or ethnic group under consideration. Provide specific examples, and identify salient factors (such as socioeconomic status).
  • Identify and evaluate the group’s beliefs, values, and traditions related to quality health, disparities, and wellness.
  • Based on analysis of your cultural group, formulate assumptions (hypotheses) about locus of control (internal versus external) in a specific cultural group’s health, wellness, and disease. The research must focus on your selected cultural group.
  • Reflect on what you have found. Provide any insights, conclusions, or recommendations that you have arrived at from your research and analysis.

The following are assignment requirements for creating your research-based paper:

  • The paper must follow APA Citing and Referencing Guidelines, which appear in the Capella Undergraduate Online Writing Center. You will need a cover page, a table of contents, body of the paper, and a reference page.
  • Length: the paper should be at least five to seven double-spaced pages excluding cover page, table of contents, and reference page.
  • References: list all references used. At a minimum, you are required to identify and use at least three sources in addition to your textbooks. Additional relevant references from the Capella University library are always welcome and encouraged.

Review the Cultural Health Disparities Research-Based Paper Scoring Guide to see how you will be graded on this assignment.

Submit your Cultural Health Disparities Research-Based Paper in the assignment area by Friday of this week.

Explain at least two recommendations to improve actions taken by the police related to eyewitness identification in the Ronald Cotton case.

Application: System Variables in the Ronald Cotton Case

o prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review Chapter 7 in your course text, Forensic and Legal Psychology. Focus on examples of system variables, and consider how they might influence reliability of eyewitness identification.
  • Review the Wells & Olson article, Eyewitness Testimony. Focus on current findings in the literature regarding system variables and their influence on eyewitness testimony.
  • Review the section on Ronald Cotton, pages 133-135 in Chapter 7 in your course text, Forensic and Legal Psychology. Also, review the Ronald Cotton case study summary below. Based on these readings, identify system variables that may have had an impact on the case.
  • Find and read a peer-reviewed article in the Walden Library about one of the system variables you have decided to analyze. Consider the significance of the system variable you selected and its relevance to the case.

Case Study: Eyewitness Identification

Jennifer Thompson, a white female college student living in southeastern United States was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in her home in the middle of the night. During the attack, the lights remained off. Despite the darkness, Jennifer claimed to have studied the attacker’s face during the assault. Consequently, she felt she was able to identify her assailant to authorities.

Shortly after the attack, Jennifer contacted police. Within hours, she helped law enforcement officials create a composite sketch of her attacker. Within a week, after examining mug shots, she identified Ronald Cotton, an African-American male, as the rapist. About two weeks later, the police arrested Mr. Cotton. Two weeks later, at the police station, she identified Ronald Cotton in a live simultaneous lineup. She told detectives she was 100% certain he was the assailant. During the trial, she clearly demonstrated her confidence that it was Ronald Cotton, the defendant, who had sexually assaulted her.

The Assignment (3-page minimum):

Provide an analysis of the Ronald Cotton case, and include the following:

  • Describe two system variables in the Ronald Cotton case.
  • Explain the significance of each system variable as it relates to the case.
  • Explain at least two recommendations to improve actions taken by the police related to eyewitness identification in the Ronald Cotton case.
  • Incorporate into your paper a summary of the peer-reviewed article you selected.
  • Be sure to provide references in APA format for the peer-reviewed article you selected from the current literature.
  • Remember, this Application Assignment spans two weeks and is worth more than twice the point value of your Week 1 Application Assignment. Therefore, your response to this Application Assignment should be clearly more substantial than your response to the Week 1 Application Assignment.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

Assignment 1 (World Cultures)

Assignment 1: Essay – Exploring Ancient Mysteries

Due Week 4 and worth 100 points

Choose one (1) of the topics below and develop a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (of at least 250-500 words) which adequately address the topic you have chosen.

Topic Choices

  • There have been many theories regarding how the pyramids at Giza were constructed. Most experts agree that they were constructed as burial monuments for pharaohs, but “how” these ancient people constructed monuments of such great size without modern machinery is a mystery which is still being debated.
  • No one can say for certain what happened to the great urban Mayan civilization, but theories abound and include varied possible alternatives to explain the relatively abrupt and mysterious disappearance of the Mayan civilization.
  • Tutankhamen died young, at approximately eighteen (18) years of age. However, his cause of death has been the subject of quite varied scholarly theories and conclusions. Did he die of an injury, of illness, of murder, or something else?.
  • Minoan Crete was a major civilization in its time, but several theories have been advanced to explain its demise, including speculations associating it with mythical Atlantis. What were the causes of Minoan Civilization’s decline?
  • Great Zimbabwe is an enormous complex of structures in East Africa. Since the builders and occupants left no written records, several theories have developed as to the identity of its builders and the functions of the structures. Which theory makes the most sense?
  • The monumental size and complexity of the Tomb of Shihuangdi is astounding, yet its location and construction details were to be kept secret. What was the emperor’s purpose for such an elaborate, secret burial place?
  • Other topic choice recommended and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph paper in which you:

  1. Clearly state the “mystery” and provide a brief summary of at least two (2) reasonable and scholarly theories which could explain the mystery. Because some theories may sound far-fetched, include the source or promoter of each theory – such as a scientist, a historian, a theologian, etc.
  2. After summarizing at least two (2) scholarly theories, identify one (1) of the theories as the most plausible and provide at least two (2) convincing reasons why the theory you have chosen is the best one to explain the mystery. This will involve some critical reasoning skills on your part.
  3. Use at least two (2) sources plus the class textbook. (Three [3] sources total as the minimum) Note:Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA style format. Both in-text citations and a References list are required. Citations and references must follow APA style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for guidance).
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. For our purposes, you may omit any abstract page.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
