Discussion forum

Assignments

1.  Weekly assignment (this will be part of your discussion forum grade for this week):

As evaluators we can create evaluation plans and evaluations for any organization and school. Even if we are not experts in the subject matter content or industry, we bring the subject matter expertise in evaluation and can partner with others who will provide the expertise in the content and industry. Here is an interesting article from Atlantic magazine website (Jan 20, 2014) on an elementary school in Greenville, South Carolina   (http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/01/americas-tiniest-engineers-report-from-greenville-south-carolina/283199/)         that has an integrated approach to learning and STEM education.

Do the following:

    • Read the article.
    • By THURSDAY, write a post, following the posting guidelines for the class, discussing how this program might be evaluated based on your knowledge of the five levels of evaluation.  Respond to the posts of at least one of your classmates by the end of the week.
    • This assignment will be part of your discussion forum grade for this week.

Forum Discussion

You will be completing original posts on two different topics this week.

1. Your regularly forum discussion on the reading (original post no later than Wednesday. Responses no later than Sunday.)

There is a lot of information in the chapter and videos this week  So, this week we’re going to try a slightly less structured discussion. Use the questions below to start your discussion on the information for this week:

    • What were the two or three most important ideas you took from the information this week?
      • Why were these ideas important to you?
      • How do these ideas relate to your current (or future) work environment?
    • What information in this chapter surprised you?  Why?
    • You are in the third week of the semester (about 18% through the class):
      • How have your ideas of evaluation changed?

How would it be structured and enforced?

Weekly Thought Evaluations

Weekly Thought Evaluations (WTEs).  Each week, the instructor will ask for a 3-5 page paper on the current week’s topic. The content of the paper will respond to the topic by including a summary of the relevant chapter and/or readings and an application of that chapter’s material to the topic.

WTE 2

Medieval scholars stated that positive law included “commutative justice”.  This meant that there should be a “just price” established for exchanges of goods and services, and that there must be no “usury” at all (they defined usury as the taking of any interest on loans).

Could the principle of “commutative justice” be applied in today’s world? Do you think it worked effectively in medieval times to achieve justice?  Would it do so in today’s world?  How would it be structured and enforced?

What are the five main core development areas for Health IT?

For A-PLUS WRITER ONLY

Healthcare Information Technology and Standards

The ability to exchange and use health information electronically is important in order to improve healthcare quality and safety. Interoperability is critical to future exchange of health data to reduce medical errors, improve quality, and contribute to medical research. In order for this to happen, it is necessary to come to agreement on a variety of data standards. It is also critical that health data is secure from all types of threats and technological vulnerabilities.

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about healthcare IT and their standards. Based on your research and understanding, respond to the following:

  • What are the five main core development areas for Health IT?
  • What do we mean by data standards? Give five examples of current data standards that are being used. What is their purpose?
  • What is needed to achieve interoperability between all providers? What types of network standards are necessary in addition to data standards?
  • What has been the role of Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health IT in data standards and interoperability? What is the Nationwide Health Information Network?
  • How do the standards in the EHR systems and interoperability networks impact the working environment of healthcare professionals?
  • What are the ways health organizations will need to protect health data from threats (man-made and natural disaster) and technological vulnerabilities?

How do social and environmental factors affect teens and young adults making healthy or unhealthy decisions?

Health Problems among Teens and Young Adults

course textbook An Introduction to Community Health refers to teens and their risky behaviors. The number of single parent households with children under the age of eighteen continues to rise. Unemployment is higher for teens and young adults, especially for minority populations. Health behavior and lifestyle choices are tested during this timeframe, with tobacco use, underage drinking, abuse of prescription illegal drugs, and risky sexual behavior. Teen violence and suicide are also a cause of concern to families and the community.

Based on your understanding of the topic, create a report in a Microsoft Word document answering the following questions:

How do social and environmental factors affect teens and young adults making healthy or unhealthy decisions? How influential is the family environment? What motivates teens to form groups and how do negative behaviors increase when teens are involved in small or large gangs? What specific issues does the U.S. minority population face in terms of health issues, lack of healthcare, and risky behaviors? What specific type of community program would you develop if you were in charge of improving options for teens and young adults? What community members would you seek to speak with about your program proposal and how important is it to include influential community members who can help support legislation, space, or financial services to help a community program succeed? How will education reduce risk taking behaviors? What type of follow up and evaluation will you do to ensure a successful program?

Analyze how at least 1 of the major themes of development (Health and Well-Being, Family and Parenting, Education, Culture, or Gender) influences the developmental physical, cognitive and psycho-social outcomes related to childhood obesity.

PSY104: week 4 discussion post 2

Prior to completing this discussion, please read Module 6 in the textbook and review any relevant Instructor Guidance. Specifically, you can review the interactive media tool illustrating obesity causes and prevention from an ecological perspective in Module 6.

In this discussion, you will utilize this template to create a brochure (or create your own) which addresses the issue of childhood obesity in order to share your continued learning in child development with others.

You will need to be sure to incorporate all of the information in a succinct and straightforward manner while remaining encouraging and positive as you share your expertise with others.  Incorporate 3-5 visually appealing images, statistics, or graphs/charts into your brochure to capture the attention of your intended audience.

Your brochure must include the following:

  • Analyze how at least 1 of the major themes of development (Health and Well-Being, Family and Parenting, Education, Culture, or Gender) influences the developmental physical, cognitive and psychosocial outcomes related to childhood obesity.
  • Address the role of parents and schools in creating this problem.  Also, include any other people/entities whom you feel deserve a portion of the blame and why.
  • Utilize problem-solving techniques in exploring developmental issues, grounded in child development, in order to explain two practical ways in which we can incorporate change to improve the health of children and families.
  • It is important to be able to explain the role of society and community agencies in assisting families in developing the optimum learning and pro-social behavior of children.
  • Be cognizant of the issues faced by single-parents, working parents, parents who are overweight/obese themselves, and those with other physical restrictions.
  • Provide two resources (one local and one web-based) for those seeking information on health and wellness.

Along with the attachment to your brochure, your discussion post should include references in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center for any information and resources included in the brochure.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the sampling strategy for your research plans?

For Prof. Moses wk 6

Sampling Strategy and Sample Size for a Quantitative Research Plan

Now that you have considered the impact that sampling strategy and size can have on the quality and reliability of a research study, you must now turn your attention to your own quantitative research plan. You have built your research plan over the past 5 weeks to include proper research design and measurement methods. This week, you add to this plan by deciding what sampling strategy best fits your research.

To prepare for this Application:

  • Review Chapter 8, “Sampling and Sample Designs” and Appendix D, “Random Digits” in the course text Research Methods in the Social Sciences.
  • Review the handout “Sample Size Analysis for Quantitative Studies” located in the Learning Resources.
  • Consider what would be the best sampling strategy for your quantitative research plan. Why have you chosen that strategy?
  • What considerations should you be thinking about for your sample size?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the sampling strategy for your research plans?

The assignment:

  • Craft a 3-to 5-page paper in which you recommend the sampling strategy and sample size for your quantitative research plan. Include a rationale for why that is the best strategy and size for your plan. Refer to the literature as needed. Use the following as a framework for your paper:
    • Population
      • Population
      • Size, if known, or approximate/estimated size
    • Sampling
      • Type of sampling
      • How the sample will be drawn
      • Sample size and why this was chosen in relation to population size
