The goal of the Session Long Project is to identify and evaluate the ethical principles used in resolving ethical dilemmas, and to apply the principles to specific ethical issues that may have professional, sociological, economic, legal or political implications.

Often times a patient needs a lot of resources prior to being discharged from the hospital. Some organizations use discharge planners or case managers to aid in acquiring these resources. The topic of this SLP is about Jenna, a young woman who could not be discharged home until the issue of resources to care for her was resolved. This story demonstrates that resource allocation decision making is inherently complex, a process that is dynamic, multidimensional, and iterative. After reading the article, “The relational nature of case manager resource allocation decision making: An illustrated case” by Fraser, Estabrooks, and Strang and doing additional research, please respond to the questions listed below:

1.     Provide a brief summary of Jenna’s case. What was her medical condition? What was her prognosis? Why was it important for her to go home? Did she get to go home? If so, how did that impact her recovery?

2.     What were the resources that Jenna needed to go home? What barriers did her case manager encounter in acquiring these resources?

3.     Discuss the theory of relational ethics as it applies to this case. What is it? How does it impact the allocation of resources?  Think about your own discipline of study, how does this theory apply to acquiring scare resources? Provide an example.

4.     Based on what you have read about this case and resource allocation, do you agree with the statement “that resource allocation decision making is inherently complex, a process that is dynamic, multidimensional, and iterative”? Why or why not? What are your views on the fairness of the process? Was it done in a fair manner in this case? Did Jenna get preferential treatment because of her case manager? If there was no one advocating for her, what do you think the

Communicating Health Risks

Assignment Overview

The public health field encompasses a number of different sectors and one valuable area is crisis and emergency risk communication. When a problem arises, public health communicators need to take quick and accurate steps in order to divert or control disaster. We have seen this first hand with H1N1 flu and SARS outbreaks. It is important to understand steps that can be taken ahead of time, so when an emergency occurs you can react with effective procedures.

Case Assignment

For this case assignment, you will be using the CDC Risk Communication resource provided in your required readings section.

Step 1: Go to the website and under Risk Communication, click on “Emergency Preparedness and Response.”

Step 2: Read through the information on this page and then under Specific Hazards, click on “Recent Outbreaks & Incidents.

Step 3: Under “Select a Year,” click on 2014

Step 4: Choose one of the recent outbreaks

In your paper:

  1. Identify the incident/outbreak you chose from 2014 for which risk communication was essential.
  2. Describe the situation that occurred and some statistics to display the severity of the incident.
  3. What types of communication/procedures were used during this incident? Provide examples on the information that was disseminated and how it aided in the situation.

Assignment Expectations

Length: 2–3 pages.

Your work will be evaluated based on the performance assessment grading rubric criteria. Review it before you begin working on the assignment.

Did you have a predatory-prey relationship with a chicken today?

Discussion—Species Interactions and You

Humans interact with various species every day without actually realizing it. In the field of ecology, these interactions can either be interspecific (between species) or intraspecific (within species). Interactions between humans are known as intraspecific (within species) interactions. For example, interactions between a human and a pet would be interspecific, whereas interactions between a human and another human would be intraspecific.

Research interspecific and intraspecific interactions using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.

This assignment has two parts. Complete both parts.

Part A

Complete the following:

  • Track your interactions with other organisms—between and within species—for one day.
  • Summarize your interactions throughout the day, using the terms from this module’s readings. If required, review the module’s readings again.
  • At a minimum, identify ten interactions that you witnessed or participated in today. Among those interactions, you should be able to identify a predatory-prey relationship, a competitive relationship, and a mutualism. You could also identify parasitic relationships or commensalisms, if you choose. Although you can repeat interaction types—for instance, you can have multiple mutualisms—the examples must differ. These are some examples:
    • Did you have a predatory-prey relationship with a chicken today? That is, did you eat chicken for lunch?
    • Did you have a competitive relationship with a coworker today? That is, were you competing for a raise?

Click here to download this template to track interactions with organisms.

Part B

Respond to the following:

  • For every interaction you identified above, describe an interaction in nature that is similar to what you experienced or witnessed. For example, if you had a predatory-prey interaction with your meal, identify and describe an example of a predatory-prey interaction in nature. Or, if you had a competitive interaction with your coworker, identify and describe a competitive interaction in nature.
  • Using the information you reviewed, explain why it is important to recognize these interactions.

Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.

Using the information that you compiled above, summarize your interactions for the day. Be sure to classify your interactions (parasitic, mutualism, etc.) and that you also determine if the interactions are considered intraspecific or interspecific.

Write your initial response in a minimum of 300–350 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Case Study:

David Wheeler got into business in order to ease his anger about his father’s murder and in an attempt to see justice done. A computer database expert, he designed a program that would sift through crime reports in an effort to link and pinpoint criminals. The first trial of the product connected several seemingly unrelated crimes and located a suspect. In 1991, Wheeler formed InfoGlide, Inc., to sell this software program to law enforcement agencies throughout the country. While the agencies found it a valuable tool and indeed used it to investigate successfully a number of crimes, as government agencies, few could afford it. Wheeler had a product that just didn’t have a market. In 1996, after struggling for several years to attract venture capitalists, InfoGlide reexamined all possible and potential markets. It discovered that hundreds of millions of dollars a year were lost because of insurance frauds— frauds that could be linked with Wheeler’s software just as police cases were. InfoGlide immediately retargeted its product and revamped its marketing plan, and by 1998 had raised $ 5 million in venture capital. Today, the company has 38 employees and is worth $ 100 million.

  1. In selecting a new target market, InfoGlide would have had to adjust all parts of the marketing plan as well. What changes could you envision in the product, the price, the promotion strategy, and the distribution?
  2. Can you identify other markets that could benefit from the basic concept of Wheeler’s software? What changes might need to be made for these markets?
  3. Researchers call this process transmigration, changing a company so it can enter a peripheral or related industry. Select a firm you know and brainstorm several transmigra
