• Concussions and Athletes: How do head injuries affect athletes over the long term, especially repeated head injuries? What are the medical data and statistics?  My kid plays football; what are the statistics on injuries to teenagers, and thus, should my child play football?
• Grade Inflation: How should the world of higher education –my world—cope with problems of grade inflation? Should students complain about grade inflation knowing that it might affect the rigor of the course?

In this section, describe your topic and how it first affected you. Explain why it is important to you. For this discussion, research the Carlill vs. The Carbolic Smokeball Company.  You may choose to use the NAU Online Library or any other web search.  Provide a short reference list with links of sources used at the bottom of your initial discussion post.  (Do not use Wikipedia)

After you have researched this case, provide a brief summary. Participate in a discussion with your classmates regarding the corporate culture at Whole Foods Market. Recall that the corporate culture consists of the widely shared values within an organization that foster unity and cooperation to achieve common goals. Discussion 8:Consumer Habits

Think back to first exercise from this Learning Plan, recall the last $100 item you purchased. Consider your thoughts on the actions the marketer took to get the item ready for your purchase. Now think about the time and effort you put into buying this particular item. How much thought did you put into the purchase? What cultural or personal factors influenced your decision? What do you know about your purchase now that you didn’t know before making it? If you do know more, is that a good or a bad thing? Have you evaluated the service? Scenario:

Recycled Furnishings is a division of an international home furnishing company called Thor Enterprises.  Recycled Furnishings makes glass sofas for outdoor use from recycled bottles and glass. The business has grown rapidly in the last thirty years and now that it has become a division of Thor Enterprises, the company is going international.  The shipping manager for Recycled Furnishings, Robert, has been in his job since the start of the company.  Prior to coming to Recycled Furnishings, Robert worked as a container manufacturing engineer at Damco, a local shipping company and worked his way up to supervisor prior to joining Recycled Furnishings. Robert, a baby boomer, quickly rose to supervisor at Damco because of his ability to optimize the way tasks were performed and his knack to implement processes so workers could be trained to perform their specialized sequence of motion in one best way.  He brought this management style to Recycled Furnishing and helped to improve the methodology of furniture assembly as well as the shipping processes.

A major shift in management occurred in the late 1980’s and early 90’s that caused Robert to reconsider his management approach.  For example, advances in technology, the organization joining a union, change in the value systems, organizational design and globalization all affected the culture of Recycled Furnishings.  Robert was successful with this transformation and contributed greatly to the company’s success.

Discussion 6: Borrowing from Friends and Family

As part of the Hearing Conservation Program, the employer is required to evaluate the effectiveness of any hearing protection provided to employees. Hearing protectors are rated using a system developed by the EPA, the noise reduction rating (NRR). The NRR is derived in a laboratory setting. There is some controversy about how accurate the NRR is. OSHA’s method for evaluating the effectiveness of hearing protection includes subtracting seven from the NRR to account for real world versus laboratory setting.

For OSHA compliance officers, OSHA divides the result in half before subtracting from the exposure level to account for individual improperly inserting the hearing protection.
