What do you think about the fact that these types of thieves target the elderly?

Week 5 Discusion

Criminal taking began as part of the social concern with violent crimes against the person. That concern led to the creation of the common-law felony of robbery–taking property by force or the threat of force–which is a violent crime against persons and their property. Criminal law next expanded to include taking property without consent, even if the thief used no force. The first nonconsensual, non-violent taking felony was larceny.

Please respond to the following prompts:

    • Review and explain at least two of the following types of efforts internet criminals use to try to steal intellectual property:
      • spoofing, piggybacking, data diddling, salami attack, e-mail flood attacks, password sniffing, and worms.
    • What do you think about the fact that these types of thieves target the elderly?

Is Reagan overrated or underrated as a president?

Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States. He was both beloved and despised.

Consider the following question: Is Reagan overrated or underrated as a president?

Choose three topics from the list below to make your case whether Reagan is overrated or underrated:

  • Economic policies
  • Principles of the New Right
  • Iran Contra affair

Examine at least two strategies that can be used to reduce noise in the workplace or in the living environment.

Prepare a 1,400- to 1,650-word paper in which you analyze the effect of population density and noise on individuals. As a part of your analysis be sure to address the following items:

  • Bullet each section
  • Describe the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space.
  • Examine how the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space have become increasingly important as populations become denser.
  • Clarify the effect nature (e.g., zoos, parks, gardens) has on individuals living in urban environments.

How can you implement a more learning centered evaluation approach in your work environment?

Read the chapter: Experiencing a paradigm shift through assessment  (  in the attachment )     (pdf file)

This chapter focuses on the difference between a teacher-centered vs. a learner-centered approach to evaluation.  I strongly encourage you to read this chapter…according to the students last semester, teacher-centered vs. learner-centered was one of the most valuable topics in the class!

  • This chapter  is from Huba, M. E., & Freed, J. E. (1999) Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses, Shifting the Focus from Teaching to Learning. Allyn & Bacon.
  • Although the authors talk about learner centered assessment in the context of college campuses, it is equally valuable for those of you working in other settings.

To earn the bonus points:

    • Read the chapter
    • Discuss the chapter with others interested in bonus points in the “BONUS POINTS: Learner Centered Assessment Discussion” forum in week 5. (This forum will be for students from all groups interested in participating in the discussion.) Post a minimum of one original post and three replies, but the topic is so interesting you will likely post/reply even more!

Use the following questions as a starting point for your discussion:

    • Any of the “reflection questions” from the chapter.
    • What are your greatest learnings and/or surprises from this chapter?
    • How can you implement a more learning centered evaluation approach in your work environment?
    • Anything else you want to discuss about the article!

Assignment #2

Forum Discussion

Please use at least three of the following questions as a minimum for your discussions on level 2 evaluation.

  • What is the purpose of level 2 evaluation?
  • What are advantages and disadvantages to using level 2 evaluation?
  • What are enablers and barriers to using level 2 evaluation?
  • Why is reliability important in level 2 evaluation?
  • Why is validity important in level 2 evaluation?
  • Level 2 evaluations are the second most commonly used evaluation.  Why do you think that is?

Also consider discussing:

  • What were the two or three most important ideas you learned about level 2 evaluations?
    • Why were these ideas important to you?
    • How do these ideas relate to your current use (or experience) with level 2 evaluations?

  • If you currently teach, think about your own use of level 2 evaluations:
    • Do the level 2 evaluations you use accurate measure student’s knowledge, skill, and application in all the areas that are important to evaluate?
    • Do you use a variety of methods for level 2 evaluation or do you tend to over-rely on one or two methods?  Why do you think that is?  What are the implications of using a smaller or larger variety of level 2 evaluations?
    • What do you know, or what are your thoughts, on the reliability and validity of your level 2 evaluations?

  • Anything else you want to discuss about level 2 evaluation or evaluations in gen

How does the motion of the tectonic plates affect the distribution of organisms?

om Visualizing Earth Science, by Merali, Z., and Skinner, B. J, 2009, Hoboken, NJ: Wiley. Copyright 2009 by Wiley. Adapted with permission.

Part 1

This diagram was similar to one Alfred Wegener drew to show the distribution of continents 300 million years ago. His theory of continental drift was met with skepticism in the scientific community.

  1. Describe three forms of evidence Wegener used to support his ideas of continental drift.
  2. Years later, the continental drift theory reemerged as plate tectonic theory, with two additional pieces of evidence.

Refer to the images above. Discuss in detail the two pieces of additional evidence that supported Wegener’s theory, now known as the theory of plate tectonics.

Part 2

Write paragraph answers to the following questions using what you have learned from Visualizing Earth Science and the assigned WileyPlus® GeoDiscoveries®.

  1. How does the motion of the tectonic plates affect the climate?
  2. How does the motion of the tectonic plates affect the geography?
  3. How does the motion of the tectonic plates affect the distribution of organisms?

Part 3

Earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis have all been linked to plate movement. Indicate how plate movement would create them.

Explain the role of hospitals and other health care organizations in contributing to or making use of this public health-related IT application.

Application: Information Technology in Public Health

Public health surveillance and prevention efforts in the U.S. reflect the involvement of numerous health care providers and organizations. Government agencies such as the CDC often function as a hub for the collection, coordination, and communication of public health-related data. Common applications of public health IT to promote and improve the health of populations include (but are not limited to) biosurveillance, disease registries, and immunization tracking. The timely and appropriate implementation of these applications can have a significant impact on the ability of providers to deliver health care to the their patients, which, in turn, can have a profound effect on a community’s overall state of health and wellness. Consider the dire impact a SARS outbreak might have, for example, if patient diagnoses were not reported and shared regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Prepare for this Application as follows:

  • Conduct a literature review of a specific application of health information technology in public health and locate an example in which the application was used to address a public health-related concern. (You might wish to begin by researching a particular surveillance program, disease outbreak, disease registry, prevention program, or other public health-related event, and then identify the technology involved in this activity.)
  • Find out how this application has impacted the public’s health. Learn also about any ways in which health care providers and organizations were involved in the use of this information technology.

Then write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe the specific application you selected and the ways in which it addresses a public health-related concern. Summarize the potential benefits to the public, as well as any possible drawbacks, arising from the use of this application.
  • Explain the role of hospitals and other health care organizations in contributing to or making use of this public health-related IT application.
  • Discuss other implications of this application for health care providers and organizations. How has it impacted (or might it impact) clinical or administrative practices in hospitals or other health care institutions? Provide a rationale for your response.

What aspects of the topic do you anticipate pursuing in your research?

-4 paragraphs APA FORMAT

For this assignment, you will be selecting and discussing a contemporary criminal justice issue to pursue as part of your criminal justice research paper for this capstone course. The topic that you select will be the focus throughout this course, so please select your topic wisely. When considering topics, think about the courses you have taken in the criminal justice program, issues that you have studied, and topics for which you developed an interest. You will not want to select a topic that is too broad, such as crime statistics; rather, consider a specific topic, such as how the collection and reporting of crime statistics could be modified to better account for the dark figure of crime.

Prepare 3–4 paragraphs that present your topic to your peers and instructor. You should include the following based on your selected issue:

  • Draft a thesis statement on your issue.
  • Provide a brief explanation of why you selected this topic.
  • What aspects of the topic do you anticipate pursuing in your research?
  • What sources do you anticipate using in your research?

When commenting to your peers, provide constructive feedback for their topic. What questions come to mind on the topic? Does the topic appear to have a clear focus? Are there resources you have encountered in your studies that may be useful to them that they may not have considered?
