Required Resources

Readings

  • Jones, G. R., & George, J. M. (2014). Essentials of contemporary management (6th ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill.
    • Chapter 7, “Designing Organizational Structure” (pp. 222–257)

This chapter addresses the different ways of structuring an organization. The authors emphasize the ways in which environmental, technology, and human factors can and should influence the choice of organizational structure. This discussion flows into an explanation of designing jobs, grouping jobs, and then forming divisions within an organization that may be based on functional, geographic, product, or market areas. The criteria and variations in global structures are also discussed. Finally the authors explain the establishment of lines of authority, communication, and collaboration.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Think about an organization that you have been a part of or are familiar with. Did that organization appear to have been rationally organized to achieve specific criteria? Were responsibilities clearly delineated? Were there unnecessary obstacles to communication or collaboration? Was technology adapted to the organization’s design, or was the organization’s structure adapted to take advantage of new technology? Was the structure of the organization truly efficient and effective? Did the organization’s structure influence the productivity and morale of employees? How might you go about changing the structure of that organization?

    • Chapter 8, “Control, Change, and Entrepreneurship” (pp. 258–295)

This chapter addresses the importance of organizational control and of designing a control process, as well as how technology and the establishment of control systems can facilitate organizational control. Two categories of control processes are examined. (1) “Output control” focuses on quantitative indicators of output, production, quality, satisfaction, and the achievement of goals, objectives, and targets. (2) “Behavior control” focuses on directing and influencing the behavior of employees and groups of employees through the use of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, boundaries, and direct supervision. Lastly, control is discussed as an important element of change management and of entrepreneurship.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Think about an organization that you have been a part of or are familiar with. Did the managers and supervisors have effective control over their areas of responsibilities? When the managers and supervisors wanted something changed or done, did this get changed or done in an efficient manner? Did the managers and supervisors really know what was occurring within their areas of responsibilities? Were there clear standards of performance and personal conduct, and how were these standards monitored and enforced? Were there goals, objectives, or targets for all functional areas? Was progress toward those goals, objectives, or targets continually monitored?

    • Chapter 9, “Motivation” (pp. 296–325)

This chapter addresses the nature of human motivation and introduces you to various theories that explain various aspects of motivation. Those theories include the family of “needs” theories, as well as expectancy theory, equity theory, goal-setting theory, and two learning theories. The chapter ends with a discussion of various ways in which money, in the form of compensation, has been used to influence employees’ behavior and performance.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Try to see how each of the theories complements the other theories. Ask yourself, what does each motivational theory contribute to your understanding of human motivation? What are the differences and the relationship between job satisfaction and motivation? What is the difference between attempting to motiv

What are the consequences of stereotyping and discrimination?

Discrimination

Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination

In many cases, prejudice stems from the unknown. As individuals, we tend to migrate toward those who may look like us, act like us, and think like us. As a result, it may be difficult for us to open our minds and embrace those whose values, beliefs, and overall sense of self differ from our own.

For this assignment, compose a paper that is three to four pages in length.  In your paper, discuss the impacts of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination in the context of social psychology.  Be sure to address the following points:

  1. Define and describe the following terms: prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and in group vs. out group. Based on your own experiences in the social world, can you relate to any of these terms? Do you identify with a particular term? Why or why not?

    2.   Examine the social, cognitive, and societal origins of prejudice and stereotypes. Be sure to include specific information regarding categorization, such as in group favoritism and the out group homogeneity effect, norms, competition for resources, and social inequalities. Of the categories presented, which do you think are the most significant in our society and in your particular community?

    3.   Analyze the influences that promote stereotyping, and offer strategies to reduce prejudice. What are the consequences of stereotyping and discrimination? Who does this behavior hurt, and in what ways does it hurt them? Are we inadvertently creating self-fulfilling prophecies in our society? If so, how can we take steps to improve attitudes, judgments, and behaviors?

Do we have an innate need to belong?

Love & Relationships

Power of Love and Relationships

For this assignment, please address each of the items below:

  1. Describe the factors of attraction. What attracts us to one another? Why are we less likely to befriend someone from another culture than someone from a similar background with a similar physical aesthetic? Be sure to identify and describe all six factors in attraction.

    2.   Discuss the human need to build bonds and relationships. Do we have an innate need to belong? If so, why? How is this need attached to our emotions, our social bonds, and our fear of deprivation?

    3.   Explain the three types of love: compassionate, passionate, and compassionate.  What are the differences and similarities among them? What is an example of each type? How does Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love distinguish romantic love, from empty love or infatuation? Please thoroughly address each of the components in Figure 12.1.

Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love

Robert Sternberg (1986) divides love into even more distinct categories. In his triangular theory of love, he describes three aspects of love. Each can be thought of as a point on a triangle (see Figure 12.1). Intimacy is one component, described as feelings of closeness or bonds to another person. Intimacy may include sharing of oneself and one’s possessions with another, counting on that person in times of need, and receiving emotional support from and providing emotional support to the other person. We tend to grow in intimacy within a relationship. Intimacy is moderately stable over time. Typically, intimacy is quite important in long-term relationships. We have some control over how much intimacy we have in a relationship though we may not be consciously aware of how much we have.

Figure 12.1: Sternberg’s triangular theory of love

Sternberg’s three aspects of love combine to form many different types of love.

The second and third components of love in the triangular theory are passion and commitment. Passion involves physical attraction to another person or expression of desires and needs. Passion is not necessarily stable in our relationships. Generally, we do not have a great deal of control over passion, though we are often aware of how much passion we are feeling for someone else. The final component is commitment. According to Sternberg, this can be a short-term commitment, the decision to love a particular other person, or a long-term commitment, the decision to stay with someone over the long term. We control the amount of commitment we have in a relationship, and it is important for long-term relationships. Individuals who are securely attached tend to have more intimacy and commitment in relationships, and greater relationship satisfaction (Madey & Rodgers, 2009).

Within the triangular theory of love these three components are combined to describe different kinds of love. For example, infatuated love is a type of love that includes passion

identify anDiscuss key factors (for example, biological, environmental, and cultural) that may influence criminal activity.

Neighborhoods of Centervale

Here’s What Happened . . .

You have just been promoted to sergeant in the Community Policing Division of the Centervale Police Department. Your first assignment is to examine the criminal behavior in your area and work with local agencies to develop proactive policies to help reduce criminal activity and lower the overall crime rate. Your jurisdiction covers many different areas; you know that a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. You decide to break down your jurisdiction into smaller areas to tackle them individually.

Area 1 is a low-income area that is often featured in the news for its high murder rate. This area is a transient, high-rent district (for example, the housing is not expensive, but most houses are rented, not owned, by occupants) populated with single-parent households. Most citizens are unemployed, and the high dropout rate paints the school system as being one of the worst in the region.

Area 2 is also a low-income area with a lot of property crime but with an overall lower crime rate than that in Area 1. Many employed dual-parent households have purchased their homes through government programs instead of opting to rent. Although the schools are better and the dropout rate is relatively lower than that in Area 1, the dropout rate is still higher than the national average.

Area 3 is culturally diverse and continually changes and grows every year. Although the overall crime rate has risen slowly, unemployment is high, property crime is high, and violent crime is high. Specifically, Area 3 has an unusually high murder rate.

Area 4 has both employed, high-income families and employed, low-income families. Because land costs less, expensive houses continue to be built in low-income areas. The Centervale Police Department reports an extremely high number of calls-for-service from citizens residing in high-income housing in low-income neighborhoods, who report frequent incidents of vandalism and other property crimes.

Here’s What You Need To Do . . .

Review the details and prepare a 3–4-page report that discusses the criminal activity in these areas. Compose your paper based on the following points:

  1. Analyze and evaluate each area. Based on your knowledge of the explanations of crime, identify and discuss key factors (for example, biological, environmental, and cultural) that may influence criminal activity.
  2. Select and apply the best criminology theory to explain the criminal activity for each area. Identify and discuss each area’s specific characteristics as they relate to the theory’s specific concepts and key terms. Be sure to include each tenet of the theory and explain how it connects to the characteristics of the specific area.
  3. Support your explanations with research gleaned from assigned readings, optional readings, and additional credible academic sources.
  4. Create a three-pronged plan to recommend that promotes crime reduction for each specific area to present to the city’s stakeholders. Compose a clear and concise theoretical argument for your plan. Be sure to use the tenets of the selected theory to support each prong of your plan.

Note: Be sure to organize your paper into clear and concise paragraphs. You should read the grading rubric before starting your paper to ensure you cover all the material appropriately. Use APA in-text citations to cite external sources that link to corresponding references on a separate p
