During the Autumn term we are going to discuss how to design, implement and analyse the results from a survey experiment.

PR1600 – Assignment 1
2015-16

Attitudes towards immigrants and refugees: A survey experiment

During the Autumn term we are going to discuss how to design, implement and analyse the results from a survey experiment. The assessment for this part of the course involves writing a brief research report (2000 words) describing what we have done (details below). The assignment must be submitted on Turnitin by 10am on Monday 11 January 2016 in Week 11. This essay will be worth 25% of the final mark. It is important that you attend every class during this term as we will be going over each section of the research report in the seminars. Please note that we will give you as much support and guidance as possible during term time; but that you will not receive supervision after the end of term. Please do not write to seminar tutors during the holidays. Any questions must therefore be addressed during term time.
About the experiment
In a recent speech David Cameron expressed concern about ‘swarms of migrants’ from the Middle East trying to ‘break in to Britain’ from Calais. His choice of language was criticised by the Deputy leader of the Labour party Harriet Harman as ‘dehumanising’. In this assignment we will investigate whether language matters and if so whether describing people from Syria as ‘migrants’ or ‘refugees’ affects how much support people have for letting Syrians come and live in the UK. In order to test this hypothesis we will carry out a survey experiment on survey monkey. Once the survey is online you will receive a web-link to the survey. You will have one week to distribute the link to friends on facebook and followers on twitter to try and get as many people as possible to complete the survey. (Note: PR1600 students should not complete the survey). We will then look at the results in class, and you will have the Christmas holidays to write up and complete the report.
Research Report
The research report must consist of the following sections:
1. Introduction (approx. 200 words)
Briefly describe the research question and provide a justification for why this is an important question to answer. E.g. does language newspapers use affect public attitudes towards migrants/refugees? Political implications.

2. Theory (approx. 500 words)
Drawing on existing literature provide a justification for the hypothesis that you are going to test and describe how the study builds on / develops existing research. Why might referring to people as immigrants or refugees affect support for letting Syrians come and live in the UK?

3. Hypotheses (approx. 100 words)
Briefly state the main hypothesis that you will test. Your hypothesis should be stated as an empirical statement.

4. Methodology (approx. 500 words)
Describe the experimental set up, outlining the various steps that were taken; including the sample; the different experimental conditions; the allocation of subjects to different conditions; and the wording of the questions.

5. Ethics (approx. 100 words)
Include a few lines on the ethical implications of the research.

6. Results (approx. 500 words)
Describe the results of the experiment. Include one table (clearly labelled). Comment on whether the results support the hypothesis or not.

7. Conclusion (approx. 100 words)
Briefly reflect on the implications of the study.

8. Bibliography
Include a full bibliography of all works cited. Please follow the departmental style guide:
https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/politicsandir/documents/pdf/pirreferencingguide.pdf

Please refer to the Undergraduate Student Handbook for departmental policy on essay submission, rules for word count, late penalties and plagiarism.

What I would like you to do also is create a sale business plan and marketing plan.

Could you please write about my idea of a Video Hologram. This idea is a concept because most 3D Holograms display a series of pictures. But my idea is a video hologram system which displays a 3D video and could be used to conduct a life feed video from one place to another. This system is a case similar to a projector needed both sides, one in where you want to conduct the video from, and one in where you want to be seen at.
And the name of the product is Holo-live

What I would like you to do also is create a sale business plan and marketing plan. The report is about a new company that I run selling this product and I would like you to include:

– Executive Summary
– Competitive Position and Marketing Strategy
– Financial Projections and Considerations
– Operations Management
– Human Resource Management
– Protecting Knowledge

Could you please also put a price for the product and also prices for the spare parts.

The report is about 3000 words.

Identify the facts from the scenario which support your decision on whether or not a contract exists for the purchase of the automobile.

HINT: See Chapters 10-14 of the text to help understand some of the legal issues covered in this assignment.
Jim and Laura Buyer visit the local car dealership because they are interested in buying a new car. The car they currently have is aging and is starting to have mechanical problems. Jim and Laura would share the new car, and use it to go back and forth to work and school. Before going to the dealership, Jim and Laura decide that they can only afford $400.00 a month in car payments.
Once at the car dealership, Jim and Laura meet Stan Salesman. Stan shows them several vehicles and Jim and Laura test-drive several of the cars. Jim and Laura particularly like the blue 4-door sedan. Therefore, they agree to give Stan Salesman a $100.00 deposit to hold the car for a day. Stan Salesman does not give them the receipt but guarantees that the $100.00 is refundable. No documents were signed.
The next day, Stan Salesman calls Jim and Laura to ask them when they would like to take delivery of the car. Jim and Laura, on the way home from the dealership, decided that they were not going to buy the car because they did not want to spend that money each month. Therefore, Jim and Laura tell Stan salesman that they have decided not to buy the car and request their $100.00 deposit back.
Stan insists that the $100.00 was a deposit on the car and was meant to be part of the contract to buy the car. Stan is very persistent and insistent that Jim and Laura have contracted to buy the car; therefore, the $100.00 will be applied to the purchase price of the car. Jim and Laura are shocked and angry as not only do they not want to spend the money, but now feel as though they are being duped by Stan Salesman.
Jim and Laura have an appointment to see a lawyer in a few days, but know you are a student taking a business law class and come to you for advice. They are very frazzled, and understandably upset that they may have just purchased a car. Since you have been taking business law, you have read and understand the elements of a contract and the defenses to a contract. Therefore, although you are not a lawyer, you provide some basic advice from what you’ve learned in your business law class.
In three to five (3-5) pages, advise Jim and Laura based on the above facts as presented, the material provided in the text, and material covered in the lecture. In your paper, be sure to address the following:
1. Define the elements of a legal contract using examples from the scenario where applicable.
2. Decide whether or not there was a contract for the purchase of the automobile.
3. Identify the facts from the scenario which support your decision on whether or not a contract exists for the purchase of the automobile.
4. Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.
5. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
o Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
o Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

discuss and compare at least two different areas in which presidential national security power was exercised by Presidents Bush and Obama, using specific examples for each. For example, you could pick surveillance for Bush and the use of military force for Obama (or, as another example, you could pick surveillance for both administrations). Also answer these questions: have both, either, or neither of these presidents been faithful to the vision of presidential power (1) envisioned by the Framers of the Constitution and (2) put into action by prior presidents (and is that the right way to evaluate them—by determining whether they have been faithful to what the Framers intended or actions taken by past presidents)?

Please also discuss at least two other presidents in writing your answer, again using specific examples. You can and should use course materials but you also must use at least five additional sources (books and/or scholarly articles) to support your arguments. Please be sure to include citations in your paper when necessary (any standard format is fine—Chicago Manual of Style, MLA, Turabian—what matters to me is that you provide proper citation so that it is clear where your information comes from. This applies both to quoted excerpts from other materials and to ideas/information used or drawn on from other sources even when you do not include directly quoted excerpts. It also applies to facts you discuss).
