Studying for this unit
This unit is offered via on-campus or online delivery.
For on-campus delivery, students attend one three-hour class per week for this unit across the 12 weeks of term.
For online delivery, students log on to their online class space (via My Classes) and undertake the weekly readings and participate in online learning activities.
The content of this unit has been designed to maximise the learning and the integration of the subject matter. Much of the unit material is specific to the Australian context. Students are encouraged to access additional information relevant to their local context, which will assist in applying the learning and ensuring its relevance. This may include specific legislation, government and professional association resources, and journals. It is important that students’ reading is broad.
In general students are expected to:
read each section of the unit carefully and make notes new content, and points that •are unclear, or in conflict with previous learning or experience
complete readings of the text and other readings and resources, making notes on •important insights or facts, especially those relevant to your assignments

There may be periodic suggestions or issues on which students are asked to deliberate and reflect. Sometimes these are dilemmas or difficult issues associated with the study topic which have no right or wrong answers, but are used to trigger critical thinking.
Attendance requirements
Attendance requirements ensure that students in PACFA-accredited courses meet their training requirements, and that learning outcomes are met for all units offered by the School of Counselling.
On-campus requirements (for students studying this unit on campus)
In this unit provided by the School of Counselling, on-campus students are required to maintain at least 60% attendance. This means that students cannot miss more than five classes in a term.
Online Students (for students studying this unit online)
There are no attendance requirements for this unit. Students are encouraged to participate in the online discussion forum for this unit, and must submit all assessments to meet the requirements of this unit.
Learning activities
Learning activities are set in each section of the unit to give opportunities for further learning. They are designed to help students think through and practice the specific skills and general concepts presented in this unit. They do not need to be sent to the academic teacher for marking. However, valuable learning opportunities will be missed by not completing the activities.
In studying this unit, students will need to maintain a learning journal for completing the activities. To structure the learning journal, set aside space for:
completing a glossary of new terminology and concepts introduced in this unit •
notes on unit content and readings •
answers to learning activities •
draft assessments. •

Students can also keep a record of their activities electronically.
Self-Assessment
There are self-assessment questions at the end of each section to test students’ understanding of the section’s content. Try to recall the answers to these questions unaided. Write down answers from memory before going back to review the relevant material in the section. Some of the questions require more than simple recall. Some will require synthesising separate issues or different pieces of information. Real learning is not just remembering the reading. It involves owning this knowledge by:
reflecting •
questioning •
relating theory to personal experiences integrating a number of readings on a •particular topic or concept
re-stating readings in your own words. •

Assignments
The assignments for this unit are carefully set so they develop from and support the key concepts and skills of the unit.

There are two options for this assignment. Students will choose one option: (You can choose either one of the two option)

Option number 1:
Write an essay discussing the history and philosophy of happiness and the role of positive psychology in promoting happiness through counselling and/or coaching.
The essay will include an overview of the concept of happiness, a discussion of the ways in which happiness can be measured and an analysis of the role of positive psychology in the promotion of happiness through counselling and / or coaching. Your essay needs to discuss the application of positive psychology techniques to the promotion of happiness. Evidence of familiarity with relevant literature and theory is required.
or
Option number 2:
Evaluate the critique of positive psychology raised by Miller (2008, p. 606): “The model of mental health depicted by positive psychology turns out to be little more than a caricature of an extravert – a bland, shallow, goal-driven careerist whose positive attitudes, certainties and ‘high self-esteem’ mask the fact that he lacks the very qualities that would enable him to attain a degree of true self -knowledge or wisdom, and to really grow as a human being”.
The essay will need to include an analysis of the above critique of positive psychology, a discussion of how positive psychology may perpetuate a stereotypical ‘ideal’ individual and include a discussion of the application of positive psychology techniques. Evidence of familiarity with relevant literature and theory is required.

The paper should explore the topic of futurism and fashion.

The paper should explore the topic of futurism and fashion. I am focusing on the materials field in Fashion history, the main topic will be how fashion designers have been using plastic as a very important materials in Fashion history such as accessories (clutch, jewelry, etc), clothing, and other parts in woman’s fashion. There should be providing some fashion designers’ works in plastic as examples, and they should be in the past (like 20th century) famous designers in fashion history.

An introduction that informs and engages the reader, providing any necessary background contextualization leading up to the thesis.

In response to the ideas proposed by Frank Luntz in his article< “Be All That You Can Be: The Company Persona and Language Alignment”(353), write an essay evaluating the advertising techniques of several popular brands in the marketplace today.
Select several ads and evaluate how they succeed, or fail, in creating the language alignment necessary to connect with consumers.
Cite them correctly
Use Luntz’ article as a reference point and a source, integrating his claims with your own.
Be sure to correctly cite all paraphrasing/summary/quoting both in the body of the paper (in-text), and a correctly formatted MLA Works Cited List. Here is a link to a web page about citing media sources.

Either essay should have the following basic components:
A title that informs the reader and provides a hint of what to expect in the paper
An introduction that informs and engages the reader, providing any necessary background contextualization leading up to the thesis
A thesis statement that provides the MAIN IDEA of the paper so the reader knows what to expect
Body paragraphs with clear topic sentences and development of ideas that are in logical order
A conclusion that wraps up the ideas for the reader, revisiting the thesis without repeating it
Correct in-text citations for ALL media (ads included) and a correct Works Cited List.

What are the strongest points the author makes to support his central claim that the markets are “rigged” in favor of algorithmic traders and against traditional institutional and retail traders?

After reading dark pools, I want you to write a discussion about the central claim of the book that markets are “rigged” in favor of algorithmic traders and against traditional institutional traders. The discussion should be between 750 and 1250 words. This means that your review will be about 3 to 4 pages double spaced, 12pt font.

Please try to use as many technical arguments from what we’ve learned in class in your review. Here are some points that can help you structure your report:

What are the strongest points the author makes to support his central claim that the markets are “rigged” in favor of algorithmic traders and against traditional institutional and retail traders?
How did these new algorithmic/electronic traders facilitate changes in market structure to create opportunities for themselves?
What conclusions do you draw about the fairness of the current market structure and the need for reform?
How accessible was the book, i.e., were you easily able to understand the terminology? Do you think that someone that hasn’t been exposed to market microstructure would be able to grasp the more technical details of the book?

Apply basic knowledge of research methodology, statistics, measurement, guidelines, ethical standards, laws, and regulations to design, participate in, and evaluate research in a variety of contexts.

Please follow these instructions:

a. The Core section will contain the following documents:

• A statement describing your immediate and long-term career and life goals, including an explanation of why these goals are appropriate and realistic in terms of your curricular, extracurricular, professional, and personal experiences.

• Students will write a paper reflecting upon their educational experiences within their psychology program journey, using the Program Goals as an organizational paradigm. That means you will organize your paper using the Goals. Sections of the body of the paper will correspond to the Goals. This paper should include thoughts regarding successes and
challenges, new insights, and personal transformations. You should relate specific courses and concepts to your journey and to your future plans. This should be at a deep level rather than a
surface mention. You must address each of the Program Goals which is displayed below and discuss how you have specifically met that goal, referencing courses, papers and concepts. List the Program Goal verbatim (with proper citation) and then address each component to receive maximum points. It is your choice to choose which course or paper meets the Program Goal; Program 2 is the only one that requires the use of course (300/ 305). The paper should integrate thoughts and knowledge from the cluster areas. It is not just personal thoughts.
The reflective paper will be 7 to 10 pages, double-spaced, not including the expected title and
reference pages. APA format is expected and you must reference yourself when quoting from past papers. Only academic/scholarly sources should be used. You should organize it by the Program Goals and use headings per the APA Manual.

Program Goals:

The student who graduates with a major in psychology will be able to  Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate studies or careers in which psychological training is relevant.

Apply basic knowledge of research methodology, statistics, measurement, guidelines, ethical standards, laws, and regulations to design, participate in, and evaluate research in a variety of contexts.

Apply knowledge of human behavior to inform personal growth, communicate effectively, solve problems, make decisions, and interact with individuals, communities, and organizations.

Use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and (where possible)appropriate technology and the scientific approach to solve problems
related to current and emerging trends within the domains of psychology.

Value diversity and different perspectives, tolerate ambiguity, and act ethically to communicate appropriately with various sociocultural and
international populations.

Also, touch on the classes that I have taken Research Methods, Biological Basis of Behavior,Cross Cultural Psychology, Intro to Clinical Psychology, Human Sexuality, Memory Cognition, and Industrial Psychology.

Instructions:

Overview
The last major assignment of the semester is also the longest and requires the most work with argument and revision. I hope you are up to the challenge. This final Synthesis #2 essay must be in the topic area of “Health and Medicine” and include at least 10 secondary sources. Three of these 10 sources must be essays from our textbook: two sources from the “Health and Medicine” unit and one source from the “Business and Economy” unit. You may certainly use items found in your Bibliography assignment too.

This final synthesis essay gives you a chance to really stretch your writing muscles and discuss your topic in numerous ways to persuade your reader. Of course, this is an argument synthesis so you are arguing a specific point and using sources to help your point come to light and appear logical and persuasive. Your sources will be valuable in providing examples or support for your ideas as well as counter arguments or ideas that you will shoot down or dismiss as you extend your critical thinking.

The Assignment
Compose a 10 page/10 source argument synthesis in the topic area of Health and Medicine. If you do not do the topic in your Proposal Assignment, email me your intended topic so I can approve it and make sure you are on the right track. Remember, you must argue a position in this essay and use sources to help prove your point. I am also asking that you include a counter argument or two to show your versatility in arguing and seeing different sides of the topic. Remember: this is not a summary essay, this an argument essay.

Composing Advice
As with Synthesis #1 you want your sources to have a dialogue and work on your terms. Do not simply support one of your sources as the only way to see something; instead, decide your approach and use the sources to help you build points. You may certainly string together points that you like from several sources and combine them into a persuasive statement of your own. This is one way to see how a synthesis builds. Your job is to conduct the orchestra and use the skills you have summarizing, critiquing and arguing to bring the reader to your point of view.

Ten pages and 10 sources might seem a monstrous task as you first read this. But slow down a minute. If you break your argument into three or four main points and build each point at 2 or so pages, you have quite a bit there. Expect a page or so for the introduction and conclusion, each, and you are right around 9 or 10 pages. So work on this essay in “chunks” and perhaps think about your sources coming in line with these chunks too. Could this mean that you are writing 3 or 4 small critique papers and then revising to make them all flow together? It could. I will help you see the drafting here in stages and we will meet to discuss your paper one-on-one at the end of Week 12. Peer writing groups will also help you develop your essay.

Counter Arguments
At some point in your essay, you are required to discuss opposing points of view to your thesis. Dealing with counter arguments can be a big plus for you as you either shoot them down or acknowledge their point of view and move on. We will work with counter arguments in class discussion as well as in They Say/I Say

How did the Company handle the crisis and how could it have handled it better?

Using either an example given by Patrice or another company NOT listed in the Textbook
Describe the Response to the crisis in terms of the Five Components of a Crisis Management Program
(Avoidance, Response, Root Cause Analysis and Resolution). How did the Company handle the crisis
and how could it have handled it better?

Patrice Smith video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbc5nsfCTn0 (Patrice gave an example at 22:40 in this video, please listen it first if you decide to use this example to write this paper. Thank you !)

. You don’t need an overarching thesis, no introduction, no bibliography.

The paper is more like four essay questions. You don’t need an overarching thesis, no introduction, no bibliography. Use the citation format provided in the “Student Guide to Writing the Final Paper” that I will upload it to you. You answer each question separately and then move on. I stated in the Final Paper Assignment from the papers I will proved you “Take the authors and their works one by one and explain why they would respond one way or the other…” I don’t expect you to spend time on authors that aren’t relevant to your answer. If you want, you could begin each answer by saying something like “I think that humans are natural born killers and I will support my position by citing evidence from Bodley 1, Ehrenreich 2, 3 and Ferguson 1. The other articles are not relevant in this case.”

That way you have mentioned the works that are relevant and left aside those that aren’t, something like that. It’s just a suggestion.

A question came up about #4 “Are they more intense today than in the past?” The “they” being referred to are violent conflicts.

Some comments also revolved around the relationship of the questions. Questions 2, 3, and 4 are indeed related. Question 2 is asking for causes of conflicts; question 3 is asking if they are becoming more common; and question 4 is asking if they are becoming more intense, meaning more destructive and more deadly. Keep them separate in your answers, but be aware that the same sources may have things to say that relate to all three questions. I know you will figure it out.

RUBRIC (also to be found in the Final Paper materials module on Canvas)

Some of you have asked for more rubric-like guidelines to the final paper. I am expecting you to write at least a bit more than a page per question. You may of course write more or less than that on any given question, but it should all add up to 4-6 pages. Here is a rubric that if you follow it, you will do just fine on the paper:

Your answers to the questions are clear (Maximum 12 pts)
Your answers are based on evidence taken only from the 6 sources (max 12pts)
You cite from all of the sources that pertain to your answers to the questions (max 20 pts)
The sources of evidence are cited correctly (max 12 pts)
You provide your own position on the questions at the end (max 12 pts)
Your sentences are grammatical and you use correct spelling (max 12 pts)
Total = 80 points

So if you competently perform those six steps as you are writing your paper and checking it over, then you will get a good score. If you do just an adequate job, then you will receive fewer points. Leaving one of the criterion out will cost you more points, and so on. Any questions? Please let me know by email.
